I have a Ricing Problem.

Hi. My name is Matt, and I have a ricing problem.

I change the theme (i.e. rice) my window manager, in this case DWM, every three weeks or so.

Now, this isn't end of the world for anyone or anything, but it's a problem I think a lot of people who use Linux have. They spend so much time making Linux shiny and cool, that they forget that their computer is actually a tool meant to get work done.

I know this definitely applies to me.

Over the four years now that I've used Linux full time, the amount of time that I've spent ricing and jumping to new DEs and WMs is just atrocious. At least now, I can make a video about it and maybe call it work, before it was just a fancy way of procrastinating when I should have been doing something else.

As Linux users, one of the most awesome things we can do that Windows users really can't, is customize the true look and feel of our Desktops. Bars and planks, themes and icon packs, these things are amazing and make Linux a joy to use and customize.

But they are also time sinks.

We spend so much time making our Linux look cool. Because it's fun. Because it allows us to share it with r/unixporn and Twitter. It's something to boast about. Hey! Look what I spent the last 12 hours doing! Woot!

It isn't as if I want to stop ricing. Or stop other people from ricing. Nor do I want to take away the ability to rice (Gnome, ElementaryOS, looking at you). But I do think that Linux doesn't really help those of us with no will power keep away from those sick color schemes on reddit.

Do you have a ricing problem?

I stopped when I realised all I wanted was something that staid out of my way, I rotate the wallpapers once in while, but then my bar is just telling me what I need to know then I can forget about it and go about my work or my games ;)

I don't know if it's commitment or complete and utter insanity. LOL. I do like the one I have this time better than the last, so we'll see if this one sticks around.

I admire your commitment a complete new rice every 3 weeks!! I've been using Linux full time for about 10 years now, and twm for nearly 7. I htink the only twm that have a different look and feel than the others is qtile because I couldn't find a way to have polybar to run properly in it. I enjoy the slow refinement process of my set-up right now more than the existent of a clean slate. Although I sometimes rice a clean install in a VM.
