I believe I saw an interview where Ridley Scott had said that originally the alien's lifespan was extremely quick, which is why it grew so fast, and it was actually near the end of its life cycle and was weak from old age and exerting itself on the crew so hard. This was retconned by Cameron in Aliens but that was the original intention.
