We dive into our feelings on the horror genre in general given Nicole's hesitance to watch this and previously, Basket Case.  We also end up on a really wierd Would You Rather.

The Exorcist came out in 1973, so if Mrs. Mattila was born in 1960, it would make her 12 or 13 when her mother took her to see it. And I 100% believe people, including grown men, fainted, because I am a grown man, and *I* nearly fainted at one point.

Holy crap bro - ALL of the nightmares lol

You wanna talk about horror movie experiences as a kid. Born in 1986 I saw Childs Play 1,2,and 3 by the time 3 was released in 1991. Tales from the crypt Demon night came out in 1995 and Dusk till Dawn out in 1996. Saw both when they were released. Think i was like 11 when i saw Hellraiser 1&2. So many nightmares lmao.

I watched sleep away camp way too early. As I kid I had questions πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I like horror movies because of the unknown and the expectation of the unknown. It’s easier for me to immerse. I mostly just imagine what I’d do in that situation and then laugh when the characters make all the wrong choices. So most horror movies for me become unintentional comedies.

Saw is actually a great movie series. Yeah it is really fucked up gore wise but the story is fantastic. It is so well written how the clues go unnoticed until the very end for the reveal. I cannot remember which saw it was but there was one where John kidnaps a cops son and tells him he is in a safe place. All he has to do is nothing and everyone will be safe. His son was literally in a safe right next to John that was kinda covered up but you dont even notice it. The writing and directing for them are fantastic but yeah... they're very gory.

I do feel you guys, pain. I notice so many horror fans ONLY want that but aren't open to the other genres. Now, who's the non-openminded idiots? Unless it's epic or fun, I'm with you all, it's just no fun. SAW and tortureporn has got to go.

Joe Dante, George Romero, Sam Raimi & David Cronenberg often mix in their horror themes with scifi material, action scenes & dark fantasy so that's why they often work with most crowds while Freddy, Alien, Predator & Jason are just cool in general. It's wild tho too when you realize some sequels/franchises have horror elements (Temple of Doom, the first Terminator, Universal monsters, True Crime podcasts, Purge films, X-Files)

Cam Sully

I def prefer the kind that mix in religious terror, demon & monster terror and home invasions/psycho thrillers but some of those I find the label confusing (how is Silence of the Lambs a horror film)?

Cam Sully

I'm with you all; unless it's a fun "monkey's paw" type anthology/movie like Wishmaster or Tales from the Crypt, today's horror & action films are just trashy and annoying. IT and They Live are def part horror and rule like you say because the characters are nice.

I taught a class about fear, monsters, and horror. Leo Braudy, professor at USC, has a great book and article about why we crave this type of entertainment. It is cathartic because what we fear is manifest as certain monsters. Watching on screen or reading about them helps us deal with the underlying fear that the monter represents. The article is titled: "Why we'll always be obsessed with and afraid of monsters. Here's a link to the article https://theconversation.com/why-well-always-be-obsessed-with-and-afraid-of-monsters-65080
