FIRE! & Nowhere to Go [Ep.18] Sailing Greece - Sailing SV CUBA

Jump on board SV CUBA as we leave Cape Maleas, where we had an amazing freediving experience at the Captain Ismail wreck and flew over the 3 million-year-old petrified forest.

This week we set off for our sail to Athens, Europe’s oldest capital. What started as a dream sail, just sailing downwind near the east coast of the Peloponnese soon turns into a situation of national alert leaving us to search for many hours to be able and keep the boat and ourselves safe.

As the weather keeps deteriorating and becomes more unpredictable, thick smoke makes navigation difficult. On a boat, you always have to consider the direction of the wind and its intensity to make sure the anchorage will be safe but with winds constantly changing and low visibility, we are left in a difficult situation.

After all, however, we manage to find a somewhat safe spot and get to stock up on essential boat supplies. But not without being squeezed for too much cash and left hanging halfway.

With new sailing provisions in the hull, we lift anchor and finally get to sail to Athens. Though Shyah panicked as she tried to sail through her first shipping lane getting dangerously close to other ships, we made it, nonetheless. Finally, we arrive at the energetic metropolitan of Athens and everything just seems to move at lightning speed. Sailing the world is very slow and sometimes all you hear are the wind and the sea for many days. We have been sailing in the Mediterranean now for several months and the sailing lifestyle seems to catch up with us, the quiet and slow movements are such a contrast to the fast-moving life of the city. We are just so excited to finally visit this amazing city and see the Acropolis with our own eyes.

Come along and sail with us.

Comments

It was very scary indeed! And in the boat we had almost 50° Celsius. Evia, a whole island up north even had to be evacuated. It was a very sad situation in Greece. We were not even able to call anyone because all the authorities were called to help in the evacuation so even the marinas never responded on the radio. One of the hardest parts was that we could not find an anchorage and were not able to sleep for days just going back and forth trying to escape the ash cloud. The boat is entirely made of Polyester (and the highly flammable sails of course) so we were petrified of even anchoring near the coast. And we felt sad for the people on land since we have friends who had fires raging literally behind their backyards. So we hope this year the country will be spared. The kitten you see in the intro and credits is our girl Pewee. She has been with us for 12 years and she just always needs to be entertained. We have no personal space haha! We think the other might actually be happy she gets the attention so they are left alone for a bit since she is a little hurricane. We also have the two boys called Vigo (big black one) and Meatballs (the grey one) but they are more of the calm gentlemen-kind 🀣🀣

Wow those fires were terrible! Glad you could work around it. In other news, your other two cats are getting jealous of the one cat with the hat getting all the closing credits.
