Many people wanted Sherman to run for president but he stated on numerous occasions that he would never accept a nomination for president nor serve if elected even if it was unanimous. Sherman held a disdain for politics and preferred military service. Also it would be odd for Sherman to be elected president before Grant.

Without that committee, MK Ultra, COINTELPRO, Family Jewels, Operation Mockinngbird, and Project Shamrock would never have been declassified and the Ameican populace would have a more positive view of FBI and especially the CIA.
