If anything was going to knock out the Eastern Roman Empire it would probably be the Slavs who migrated to Central Greece, who the Romans called Sclaveni.

2025-03-31 15:18:13 +0000 UTCI really do like the Roman Empire scenario but the Western Roman Empire was by far the weaker of the two. Had something knocked out the East first the scenario is largely going to see the West limp along like a dying animal for another few decades or century if it's lucky before it finally gets put out of its misery then the real scenario becomes not, "What if the West Survived" but, "What if there was no Byzantine Empire" which is a different scenario. Which may come up again. The St. Petersburg goes boom scenario is just so unique I had to vote for it.

This was just a year before the Tunguska meteorite struck. Imagine, if such superstitious ignorance was still widespread in the highly industrialized and modern United States, how would people in Russia, a backwards country pretty much still in the Middle Ages, react to such an apocalyptic event as brimstone from the sky destroying the richest city of the country, a symbol and result of Russia's modernization?
