2nd question: Is it easier to play on an electric guitar if an acoustic seems difficult to make progress on?

Joe

are you able to play most chords, (more than the major and relative minor) in any position of the pentatonic scales or will that come later on thanks !

Kenneth Knapton

Hi Scott have been on a couple of months and and have worked through all your basic theory for guitar and up to caged 2 lesson 7 ....

Kenneth Knapton

Hi Scott, I am trying to learn the Johnny Cash strum pattern (Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, etc..) and am have great difficulty picking between the root and base notes, any help is most appreciated.

Joe

Hi Scott! Sorry to hear about the puppy issue, hopefully Betty is OK! My question today stems from an issue I've been dealing with of late, needing to take time away from the guitar due to some arthritis. Getting back to playing regularly again, but i can tell that i'm in need of refreshing some of my skill work. Any thoughts on how to get back up to speed after some forced time away without going back to square one? (Or maybe that's the best thing to do?) Thanks Scott. It's good to be back!

Hey Scott, I hope Betty feels better soon! I'm really impressed with your teaching program so far. I'm still practicing scales from lessons 1 and 2 and taking my time to learn the intervals in Lesson 3. The written documents and homework are amazing tools-- I've been developing a notebook and pasting in excerpts from your stuff that helps me remember. I'm excited to contribute more to your Office Hours with questions as I learn more.

Hey Scott, Hoping to make the call today. I picked up a 5-string bass. Any suggestions on incorporating into my practice routine. So far, I have been using it to practice playing with a metronome. Also, any bass beginner tips for clear notes, string dampening, etc? Thanks!

Jeff Sanders

Hey what’s up Mr. Scott?! My question is this: Can you show an example of how to play scales in between chords? For example, if I’m playing a in the key of C major, and I’m playing a C major chord, how can I use scales to “spice it up” before moving to the next chord? Thank you sir!

Tristan Melton

Hi Scott. Question No2. What does the ideal practice routine/schedule look like?

D'oh!-Ray-Me

Hey Scott, sorry for the long question! I found a little weirdness that I hope you can explain please. Whilst messing around long ago I stumbled across a fun little loopable pattern played over the progression: Em G A I've recorded it just to demonstrate, sorry for the poor audio! https://youtu.be/H72y3HCz_Fo. I have played this thing a lot, and it's only this week I decided to write it down and improve upon it, but soon realised that these three chords don't fit together in any scale that I am familiar with; for it to be in the key of E minor, it would have to be: Em G Am. I tried that, and it sounded a bit.. meh. It didn't have that same feeling of resolution that A major had. I also noticed that Em G A can be played in the B minor scale although it would be very strange to have a progression that didn't feature the tonic chord at all, so I ruled that one out. No matter where or how I play Em G A, it seems to sound pretty good to me; it does not sound out of key at all. The A major seems to give the phrase some resolution and a nice return to Em where nothing else suffices (to my ears, anyway). Essentially, I'm sneaking a C# in to a piece that is otherwise heavily favouring the E minor scale. But my question is... do my ears deceive me? Am I hearing something as being in key when it's not? Has my brain got so used to this little phrase sounding one particular way that anything else I try now just sounds wrong; or is there some theory that might explain this oddness? Thanks!

Hi Scott, Is it possible to have some technical info about how you use your iPad for the homework? I'm currently downloading the PDFs and printing them off, but my printer is kind of thirsty on the ink. It would be a lot cooler if I could get the PDFs on to a tablet and write/delete stuff on the screen. I've got an ancient iPad 2 which is probably not be up to the task but I might invest in one of the newer cheaper tablets if it can get the job done. I've also got a laptop which is new-ish but doesn't support writing on the screen. Thanks, Ray

D'oh!-Ray-Me

Hi Scott, this may sound strange or not :D, but I find it easy to put lyrics on any strumming patterns but not on finger picking patterns! So the flow is the following... find a chord progression strum it and then lyrics come as you strum easy… when you replace up and down strumming with finger picking this doesn't work… any tips to help with that?
