Questions about Community Challenges

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering: Should stick with a weekly Community Challenge as I (mostly) have been for the past year or so, OR should I switch to every other week to give people more time to participate?

If I switch to every other week, I'll make a video for each community challenge, spelling out a variety of ways to achieve the goal of the challenge. I'd like to make them like CC 51, with the final creation at the beginning of the video and the rest of the video showing of how I got there. Or something like that, at least.

If I stick with every week, I'll keep doing the challenges by text like I have been.

Which would you prefer? Also, if you have ideas for challenges, feel free to share them below!

Seems safe to say that most people would prefer a new approach. Cool!

I vote for every other week. I have not yet formally participated in a community challenge but enjoy participating informally. The every other week cadence, especially in the format that u are suggesting, would be right up my alley. Thx for asking, Scott.

I'm new to the community and have not as yet participated in any challenges. Still working my way through the amazing theory lessons, (and loving them!), My vote would be every other as I have a bad habit of trying to sample too much contnet and not mastering anything well. Having two weeks to work on and really nail something down would help!

Hi Scott,

Haha. I think my main goal - and the reason I did it weekly - was to emphasize the idea of writing music and playful and low-pressure. I think I can still do that with an every-other-week system WHILE leaving room for more advanced students to put even more time and effort into a challenge.

Thank you, Tony! This is valuable feedback!

I think what really matters in these challenges is the learning process. Not just for the ones who try it out but for the others who listen to it and read feedbacks... like..."oh this is not mixo because of this...try this instead". Some how we have lost a bit this and went a bit on "showing off" territory.

I have been a student with you for about 6 months, woking my way through the suggested lesson plan. I had not been participating in community challenges because frankly I had no real idea what to do or how they would fit into my guitar journey...this video changed all that! Watching you work your way through the challenge was an eye opener. very much enjoyed it.

Another vote for extending the time between challenges here too. I think that allowing everyone (yourself included) to engage with them in a deeper way can only be a good thing. They can seem to flit by in a bit of a blur at the current pace!

I was feeling like the video explanation of the challenge might have more teaching power

Riccardo - I think something like this would be nice. Maybe I could loop a review of previous submissions into community challenge videos, but I have a hunch fewer people would participate if they thought I was going to play their submission for everyone. I'll weigh the pros and cons

Although I really like the weekly challenges, I think more people might post if every other week. I would really like to watch videos that help make me understand the challenge better.

Hi Phil - I think the price automatically adjusts to your currency - maybe the exchange rate is different now? I haven't changes prices. Thanks for your input.

PS - I see your advert on patreon. I’m paying more than that - has it gone down? Phil

I’ve never engaged with community challenge, I play everyday and often several times a day thanks to your online tuition , so thank you - on this basis I think the video content would encourage me in! I’m more than capable of the stepping up to the challenge but I just haven’t, as soon as I do I know I’ll make even more progress. So for me every fortnight. I’m sure you have far more watchers than participants as is always the case but I’m sure we all learn looking in. Phil

Hi Scott. I like listening to Live chat when walking the dog and find I’m visualising what you’re doing and what you are about to - happy when I get it right but I always learn something new!

For me weekly actually put me off as I never had the time and I ended up dropping out. I know that's just me and it's a bit of an excuse. My preference would be monthly with updates/reviews etc ongoing where you could give feedback, encourage people to get on board etc
