Hi Everyone,

This video is for everyone! Whether you just arrived or you've been here a while.

I'm trying something new here. For some of you, this might be review and for others this might be an exciting new venture into creativity. The idea with this video is that everyone is welcome.

You'll see me advertising my Patreon a few times because I made this for YouTube, but I thought you all would really enjoy it as well.

The idea here is simple: Get comfortable with an E Major and A Major chord all over the fingerboard using this jam track and the note name scratch paper attached below, or Graeme's online note name scratch paper.

There is little mention of the CAGED System or root notes or anything too specific, because the main goal of this video is to learn how to be creative and explorative with voicings all over the fingerboard.

If you wanna chat about this lesson, post a video or audio of some cool voicings you've found, or just some note name scratch paper markings of some interesting voicings you discovered, consider posting about it in the community forum.

If you ARE new here and you found this fun, consider checking out Music Theory for Guitar to understand how this works!

Jam Tracks for this video:
90 BPM (original)
75 BPM (slower)
60 BPM (slowest)

Hi Scott, I recently joined because your rig showing the notes as you play is truly unique and an enormous help to me. I've been learning for 2 1/2 years now and found a number of great teachers and lessons, but the one thing about great teachers is they play great guitar and for me its hard sometimes to actually see what they are doing (playing) like watching a magician, so your lessons fix that - Excellent Thank you

Pete Dawkins

You are very gracious Scott. You are a real blessing to us!

Hi Mark - Sorry to hear that you're disappointed. I think I should add a disclaimer: This kind of thing takes a long long time to get comfortable with. A 20 minute video about a topic might make it feel like it should only take watching the video once or twice to understand the concepts, but understanding is only one part of the story. It's like getting to know someone - you can learn a lot about a person - their height, hair color, general clothing style - but it can take decades to really get to know someone. With concepts like these, it's important to remember that it takes a lot of time practicing, playing around, and experimenting to feel like you're getting to know this stuff. HERE IS AN IDEA: Watch my CAGED Basics series - its a great way to get to know these concepts one piece at a time. I think revisiting this lesson after working through that series will give you the exact info to return to this video with a different perspective, like you mentioned.

Scott, you deserve the accolades you get from everyone and I join them. However, in all honesty, this video and videos like this are a little discouraging for me. I showed this video to a guitar playing friend and he quickly shrugged it off saying he could never do that. It makes me feel the same way. In reading through comments, I never see anyone reacting as I am describing. Maybe my friend and I are the only ones but I have to say this to you. I have spent the last several years seriously working to learn the notes on the fretboard. Though I have made great progress, it seems I would need a camera guitar in my brain in order to really see these notes up and down the fretboard as you are demonstrating. As for me, I'm just going to ignore this video and concentrate on your other great lessons. Maybe, hopefully, some day I can return to this with a different perspective. Writing this has been really painful for me as I think you are the best guitar teacher I know of. You are truly a blessing!

Man, the visual aids are so helpful. You are revolutionizing guitar teaching. Way to go!!!

Hi Richard - I'm working on making things better and better. I'm considering redoing the Music Theory for Guitar series at some point to make it more engaging like this video. Glad you enjoyed it!

I like the presentation of this video: getting us to pause with the information all there on screen is so much more accessible than your early lessons where you had two or three separate (and sometimes lengthy!) practice videos. Thanks for the cool lesson, I definitely need to do more of this!

Kylir! Hi. I've been slowly upgrading it little by little over time here

Scott Paul Johnson

Really nice Scott! When did you upgrade the guitar-camera-christmas-light device?? It's super cool! And you can even highlight notes on the scratch paper! I've been really bad with my guitar practice over the summer... Need to go back to it!
