CAGED Basics II | 2 | C Shape

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Lesson 2 of CAGED Basics II. Please watch Lesson 1 first.

In this lesson, I'll help you get much more familiar with the relationship between the C shape triad, the A Minor shape triad, and the C shape pentatonic scale. Check out the PDF attached at the bottom of this post.

Each episode of this series has a Lesson section, a Homework section, and a Practice section. My goal with this format is to first get you familiar with the concept in the Lesson section, then let you get to know the concept for yourself in the Homework section, then finally give you something to play that uses the concept in the Practice section. You can find bookmarks embedded in the video above for each section.

Here are the BPM tracks for the Practice section. Keep in mind, to move on to the next lesson, you don't need to be able to play the track faster than 60BPM, but I've provided faster tracks for those of you who might enjoy the challenge.

Can’t say enough how wonderful the homework and practice is to driving home the lessons thanks!

Erin

You got it. Thats it

Scott Paul Johnson

Wow, that is a lot of dots! Tell me does it make sense to say... "every pentatonic pattern has inside it, both a major and its relative minor scale?" Or is there a cleaner way to say this?

Richard Finlay

Awesome thank you! Are we gonna study Minor pentatonic as well?

blase.tattoos

Major pentatonic scale

Scott Paul Johnson

Thanks for this lesson! I have one question, are we learning the major or minor pentatonic scale? For what I understood it’s a major but I want to be sure

blase.tattoos

Yo Scott, out of curiosity. Wich fingers do you use for each snare? I get conflicts in which fingers should go where. This playin with a pluck is not doable for me cause then I can't pluck 3 strings at the same time. I mean the fingers of your right hand, I was too fast with my question. I did not finish the lesson and in the end you tell how you play. Thanks!

Wouter Driesen

While I was filling it out? I just watched. Good catch. I did miss one. I'll talk to my editor to get an updated video

Scott Paul Johnson

Good call. I should adjust that. The top table is the C Major Scale, and the bottom table is the C Pentatonic Scale

Scott Paul Johnson

I think you forgot a G note in the Bb pentatonic in the Homework section.

Escanor

Thanks for letting me know. I'll fix that soon.

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Escanor - These concepts are covered in Music Theory for Guitar. I highly recommend checking that out first!

Scott Paul Johnson

On page 3 of the lesson pdf, I assume that the table contains the C Major Scale and the C Major Pentatonic Scale? It somehow looks if C Major and Pentatonic Scale don't belong together. Maybe use colors to make it clearer it is one sentence?

Escanor

Kind of embarrassing to ask this, but how is a Key created? Don't really understand how Dm follows after C...

Escanor

There is an error on the first page of the lesson pdf. It says "Below, you can see the A Major Shape on the right", but it should be on the "left" instead.

Escanor

I chuckled at the part where it was mentioned that the pentatonic scale makes you sound good even if you didnt know what you're doing. I find it really true

Leon Neri

Little lovely tune an end here to play Mr. Well done. It is exactly what I am into... connecting chords shapes and melody together. I would love to see this also with the modes and more chords progressions on different places on the guitar. I know... the title is "CAGED BASICS". Probably you will bring into the CAGED soloing. I hope! You engaged the fire. Now you have to burn it out. 💥🔥
