Music Theory Monday | 18: Melody Morphs

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone!

In this lesson, we get more specific about those primordial melodies we made in the previous MTM. Using the Melody Morphs sheet (attached), I walk you through how to create an A phrase and a B phrase with some sneaky techniques. I hinted at C phrases, but we'll get into that in another lesson.

Have fun making melodies using Add, Subtract, Flip, Change and Relocate and post your discoveries on the community forum post for this lesson.

Music Theory Monday | 18: Melody Morphs

Comments

It's always great fun to follow your instructions and morphing, play along while pausing and trying to keep p. Makes me appreciate the Em and D chords for sure, but in the context of rearrangement and pacing! I like how you give short cuts for timing and note pitch with the quick note ladders. It's hard to think there could be a clearer or more basic way of understanding melody than what you're doing here.

thank you for the courses, I'm learning a lot :)

Hi Lee! The Rubik's Cube series covers how to manipulate shapes into Major Minor Diminished, Augmented, etc - but if you're just joining, I recommend starting with the Music Theory for Guitar Series, then Music Theory for guitar - it puts everything in context better.

Hi Scott, I'm new here. I watched your video on explanation of changing major chords to minor chords. Very clear explanation. Anxious to dive into the entire theory library. Is there a video explaining how chords morph to sus, sus4, add 9, diminished, augmented, 7ths, etc. ?

Awesome!
