Music Theory Monday | 09: Mode Clarification

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone,

Last week I got a lot of comments to the effect of "don't move on, let's keep working on Dorian." So I decided to do another lesson clarifying how to think about modes in general and then the last bit is about Dorian specifically. I made some cool charts to help show my points and I made a fun little GIF which I'll post on the community forum. ALSO - SURPRISE - I upgraded my equipment for better clarity, sharper image, and the ability to zoom in a little as needed in editing. I have more exciting education-supporting upgrades planned for the future, but I'm not ready to discuss them yet... hehehe. I hope you enjoy this lesson and keep in mind - if this is your first video of mine, definitely go back through the previous Music Theory Monday lessons. See Below.

As always, thanks so much for being here and I hope you learn a lot while you're here.

Hey man - just want to say that I have been taking your lessons for just about a year now - typically shooting for at least 30 minutes a day on any single topic, but starting from the top of your recommended lesson plan. Simply put, thank you for all that you do. You have truly changed my life. Rock on brotha.

Jacob Bird

I’m wrong. Sorry

Julian Caron

Watching this I think I recognize that “never my love” is in b Phrygian. Or at least the beginning is?

Julian Caron

Guys watch with patience until 40th min. Pause, make a coffee, grab a pen and paper, then start again. You will understand everything in last 20 min. I promise :) Thanks Scott.

Sev

The thoughtfulness and simplicity you’ve put into these docs are the best I’ve seen around the inter webs. Thanks dude!

Jonathan Schafer

You make the concept very easy to understand.

Brenda Thomas

Haven't pause to make the scale dude, but I am with you. Promise! Nice lesson, nice pdf, nice effort from you to clarify even further. Congrats!

DeDé

No question, I was just commenting that these songs seem to be in "E dorian" as they both go from Em to A7. That was one of the takeaways for me from this lesson.

Matthew Juszczynski

Hi Matthew! I'd love to help, but I'm not sure what your question is. Would you mind clarifying?

Scott Paul Johnson

Matthew Juszczynski

Nelson! Its exciting! More exciting things to come, just takes time. Todays stream will be at 6pm

Scott Paul Johnson

New video quality is crazy good Scott! This lesson really clarified a lot for me. Will tomorrow's stream be morning or evening?
