Crossfire One-Off Game

Hi everyone,

Since I'm still waiting for my new PC to arrive I've not been able to work on the project much, but nonetheless I've cobbled together a new one-off game for testing.

Crossfire is a historical wargame with one very interesting twist: the game has no distance measuring and there is no fixed turn structure or activation limits.

The way this works is actually quite simple and elegant.

Weapon Ranges - All weapons have infinite range because the distances at which the game is played are actually quite short for modern firearms.

Activations - There is no limit to how many activations each player has, but instead different actions (such as shooting and rallying) have a chance to fail, at which point the turn changes to the other player.

Movement Distance - There is no limit to how far each unit can move, however movement actions are split into pivoting on the spot or moving in a straight line, and entering/exiting terrain features counts as an additional action. This is important because the enemy can react to each different action by shooting.

Reaction Fire - Whenever an enemy performs a move action within line of sight all enemies may react by shooting. This can lead to your units being suppresses (which ends your turn) or can lead to a complete miss (which stops the unit from reacting to any further moves).

When all of these systems interact together you get a really interesting tactical game where movement and positioning really matters, and everything flows really quickly since no measuring is required.

Honestly it's so simple and intuitive that it makes me wonder if something like this could be applied to all sorts of other games.

Anyway this ruleset has been really fascinating me so I've created a first draft of a one-off game based off Crossfire, which you can find attached to this post.

Right now the attached rules are just a straight up port of Crossfire, but I'm going to be testing the game some more and then work on a custom game that is inspired by these cool mechanics.

Give it a go, maybe you'll love it too! :D

Cheers,

Gaetano

Crossfire is a very fascinating concept, and I feel like having a one-page shoot-off will make it all the more accessible. I look forward to a full release!

That's a fun mix of Rogue Stars and Rogue Planet. (I collect skirmish games). Me like.

Yes, this file is just a starting off point to test the main mechanics without needing the full rulebook. The one-off game we're thinking about will be its own thing, inspired by these mechanics. :)

I think these kinds of things are what make a game great. Not the dice for shooting or stats, etc. This game is memorable (though I've not played it) for its flowing nature. I imagine you'd have to play a good bit to get a feel for it. Similarly, the game Chain of Command breaks up the "line up on both sides and then take turns moving forward and shooting" in several ways. These ideas are what can make a game a really exciting experience. (IMO, of course)

Will you change the name? I think a lot of fans will be OK with the homage, but not calling it Crossfire.

Thank you for your feedback. Right now I'm thinking of adapting the game to work either as a skirmish game or a large battle game, but either way I'd like each side to only control about 8-10 units each. Not sure if that's already too many, so we'll definitely need to playtest a lot! :D

Correct. The original game was made for 15mm models and uses 32mm square stands with 3 models on each, so originally it's within 1 stand distance. Since our version is being adapted for 28mm we're using 3 base sizes distance instead, but this is one of those rules that I'd like to change anyway so that there is truly no measuring in the game at all.

It's a great system, we played it heavily in the 90s. One thing to keep in mind with it is that the system can be 'broken' if you scale the game too large. The activation mechanic simply falls apart when you have too many models on the table. Keep the games very tactical and you'll be fine.

Looks pretty cool so far! One question: what does "Within 3 model's distance" mean under Morale? 3 base sizes away?
