Bonus video - The 2025 Jane Oscars (spoilers!)

Greetings Patrons. I made you a little (hour long) unscripted vid recapping my thoughts on some of the 2025 Best Picture nominees, as well as some non-Oscar nominated films that I've decided to honor in my own informal awards ceremony.

Most of my reviews stayed relatively spoiler-free, but I did get into some spoilers for Conclave, The Substance, and the Mark Wahlberg dog movie Arthur the King. I apologize in advance for how your opinion of me might change after hearing my take on The Substance. Enjoy!

I really liked The Substance personally, but tbh I totally get your problems with it. I was just never really bored during it haha. Also loved Anora though! I followed the awards ceremony as someone who was already super into Sean Baker's filmography and ended up happy as hell, and then immediately all the annoying filmtwitter hot takes came in 😭 There's been some commentary from actual SWers I definitely sympathize with, but also imo you just cannot conclude anything about Baker's views on SWers without looking at his previous movies, especially Tangerine. That being said, very funny to imagine how much worse the discourse would have been if my personal Baker fave (Red Rocket) had gotten that level of mainstream recognition instead lol

there might be more on this soon.... MIGHT

i also get the ITH criticism re: vanessa. why are they girlbossing characters like vanessa and cinderella like this? i did prefer the visuals of ITH to wicked. maybe it's because jon m. chu had more limitations in terms of scope and storytelling and that was a good thing.

belated reply - would love a fuller step up series breakdown from you 💜

papal yaoi goes hard! old man yaoi is having a serious moment

Haha still haven't seen it. I did recently watch the alligator horror-thriller Crawl by the same director and thought it was an effective gator pic. I'm not necessarily anti-new french extremity though, the movies I was generalizing are more like 'highbrow' (attempting to be highbrow) awards season movies

Jane Mulcahy

I've been super into Conclave lately but I agree with you about Benitez being intersex- I'm trans and honestly I liked it because the final scene felt like a way to talk about trans/gnc people without actually talking about us, which allowed it to be kinder and more natural than most mainstream movies that actually address trans people are. It's kind of like when you get better gay messages out of queerbait than media with canonical gay characters because there isn’t the pressure to Talk About It. Also, I won't lie, I do love the papal yaoi hehe

Now I'm really curious what you think of High Tension since it's a French movie (is it cinema? Idk)

Stanley cameo! We love to see it

Hee hee you called Twister "breezy."

Yeah next time I want to do a chat maybe I should make a post announcing it a day before or something! I wasn't sure if it would send out a notification or not

I completely agree about Wicked being basically okay and actually exceeding my expectations (just because movie musical adaptations have had such a bad run recently with Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls, Cats, etc that my expectations were relatively low). Also, I didn't realize Jon M. Chu directed Now You See Me 2 and two Justin Bieber concert movies?? Truly, a filmography made for 14-year-old girls. I liked Conclave and I think it had the strongest ensemble cast of the BP nominees. I was trying to convince my friends to watch it and I was surprised how many of them assumed it was about sexual abuse within the Catholic Church because the only thing they knew about the movie was it was about the Pope. Like I guess the last conclave irl was so long ago so a lot of people my age (early 20's) have no clue what a conclave is. Idk if this is a widespread phenomenon but I thought it was funny. I haven't watched A Complete Unknown and I probably never will because I am just so tired of the musician biopics. I feel like there are multiple big-budget ones every year and at least one becomes a big awards juggernaut. Surely at some point, they'll run out of musicians to make biopics about right?? I also haven't watched Anora because I'm nervous that I won't like it because I really didn't like Red Rocket (Sean Baker's previous film). But I think Anora is suffering from the BP win backlash where people who wanted another nominee to win will hate on it and claim their pick was robbed. I couldn't get through the entirety of Emilia Perez either. I'm almost thankful that Karla Sofía Gascón got into a huge controversy during awards season because I agree with you that it prevented Emilia Perez from winning a lot more Oscars. AND YES it was complete category fraud to submit Zoe Saldana for Best Supporting Actress when her character was clearly a co-lead. But actually, I could go into a whole tangent about how supporting actor/actress awards are structurally biased toward roles that blur the line between lead/supporting. Isabella Rossellini had a true supporting role in Conclave but people were mad that she got nominated for Best Supporting Actress because she didn't have enough screen time. Personally, my biggest Oscars snub was Furiosa. Not for BP but probably for cinematography or visual effects. Also, I'm sorry for missing the Oscars watch party/chat !! Especially because I was the one who suggested you do it lol. Patreon usually sends me a notification when one of the creators that I support posts something but I guess they don't do that for chats

Kaitlyn Min

Thank you, this made me cackle. I ALSO felt validated because Anora > The Substance (I did love both but STILL, I too am not a ~cool feminist~ I guess).

Lane Gibson

yeah in my experience there are usually a couple french films deserving of the hype every year (not usually the ones that get honored at the oscars lol) and then the rest are raunchy comedies called like 'the [french racial slur] who came to dinner' or 'the sexy 14 year old' or something

Jane Mulcahy

as a french speaker, i never understood why people were so reverant of french cinema, because i grew up watching like the average popular mainstream movies, and they're all just aggressively every "ist" you can be, so whenever i'd hear people say it's great cinema i would be so confused. then i realized they were speaking of like more artsy type stuff, and was like okay yeah no that makes more sense, it's not the french of it all, it's the type

nei vilde

the joscars!!!!
