What I'm working on - February 2025

Hello Patrons,

I've had such a weird schedule lately I almost forgot to do a monthly update post! So here's a late one. I hope you've all been enjoying the final Dante's Cove video, as much as you can knowing how the show ends, that is. I've thought about editing all three videos into one supercut and also putting that on the Patreon, does that appeal to anyone? Just to have a more convenient way to watch all of them back to back.

My upcoming project is still the Lifetime husbands video. I shot it back in January but got sidetracked with my Flight Risk video, Dante's Cove, and life in general. But I'm finally really getting down to editing it, and I'm hoping to have it done in the next week. I'll probably refer to Degrassi Alumni and True Alphas to help me pick out a thumbnail soon. It's not super long (by my standards lol) but I think it'll be a fun one.

A couple of out-of-context frames for you.

In January, I also started recording the 'writing my own Lifetime movie' Patreon video I suggested a few posts ago. I did a few sessions of brainstorming/outlining on camera and then sort of resolved to get some of the actual writing done off-screen, but I haven't had much time to do that yet. I'm hesitant to release parts of the process before the whole thing is completed, because I don't want to set myself up for stress related to delays, procrastination, etc. I guess I'm considering it a work in progress that I'll have going in the background for a while and hopefully will complete eventually.

I had another idea for a Patreon video in the meantime, a video in which I outline a hypothetical season 4 of Dante's Cove as if I've been tasked with writing it. A fix-it of sorts. I'm picturing this like a Jenny Nicholson-style ramble video. As if I'm not derivative enough of her schtick already...

I did feel heartened by the Flight Risk video getting more views than I expected, because that tells me that I'm able to make an unscripted, more minimally-edited video and still have it do well on the channel. I still prefer scripted vids and have no intention of ceasing to make them; I don't want to decrease the overall quality of my work, but given that I'm busier now than in previous years, it might make sense to put out some more chill videos in between the higher-effort ones. I get a lot of comments telling me to upload more frequently, and I wish I could, but it's often not as simple as that.

I'm also trying to make some moves with my podcast! Similarly as above, I'm not trying to have First Respodcast take priority over my videos, but it's definitely a fun venture and I want to explore my options with it. I renewed my IMDB pro account because I'm strongly considering emailing Devin Kelley (actress who played Shannon on 9-1-1)'s people to ask if she would appear on the pod. Most likely nothing will come of it, but I figure there's no harm in trying. I'm also thinking of reaching out to ABC's press contact to see if there would ever be an opportunity for an official collab. Again, I can dream, right???

Beyond that, I'm not entirely sure what's next in terms of videos! Like I've said before, I intentionally left my roster blank to allow for surprises and now I'm kind of at sea... Feel free to share your dream video topics in the comments; no promises but maybe it'll get the ball rolling!

Thank you all so much for your support this month and every month.

Haha I keep getting comments mad at me for insinuating that it's a bald cap because Wahlberg SAYS he shaved it (a thing I acknowledge in the video!) but it's like idk what to tell people, it LOOKS like a bad bald cap. What else can I say 😭 Oscar party is a good idea!! I still haven't watched a lot of the BP nominees so I'd have some catching up to do but that would be fun

Jane Mulcahy

I loved the Flight Risk video! I'm not sure if you've seen the Flight Risk steelbook but it's actually hilarious how much they're playing into the Mark Wahlberg baldcap thing lol Also, I'm not sure if you're following the Oscar race but it might be fun to do an Oscar watch party for Patreon!

Yeah no even as an American I feel the exact same about the spinoff. Maybe I'm just being an insensitive northerner, I'm sure Texas and Tennessee have plenty of meaningful cultural and geographic differences, but for a dumb high concept TV show I don't think they're distinct enough. I was really hoping for somewhere cold like Alaska or (biased) Minnesota. Just something different in terms of climate/culture! Something swampy like Florida would've been fun too. Or maybe a small town setting instead of a big city. Or a different country entirely! I'm sure they have their reasons for picking Nashville but I sure don't know what they are

Jane Mulcahy

Yes to more Dante's cove! Say, what's your take on the new 9-1-1 spinoff setting? As an Australian, the nuances of USA state subcultures are lost on me, but it seems like there's nothing that makes Nashville appreciably different from Texas or even LA. It seems like they might have gotten more mileage out of a northeast state like Maine, Vermont or Michigan. Maybe even Alaska if they were feeling adventurous. But alas...

it's funny that you say "the actress who plays taylor kelly" because as I was writing this post I was thinking about how I've always known Shannon's actress's name but I've somehow never learned Taylor's actress's name...

Jane Mulcahy

believe in yourself, you WILL get devin on the pod! i think you could also swing the actress who plays taylor kelly

If we're throwing out dream video topics, mine would be Bessie, an unproduced Richard Kelly screenplay about a talking cow that becomes a celebrity. It's an awful script. Pretentious, whiny, and meanspirited in a kind of fascinating way. I've been obsessed with it for years.

the dante's cove supercut would be appreciated, i like to rewatch those. and I'm super down for the season 4 fix-it lmao.

Happy Sunday Jane!!! I went down a rabbit hole yesterday looking into voice actors of a video game and found that one of my favorite voice actresses was in a movie called "Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains". That was such an insane title (and so lifetime-y) that I HAD to watch, and I was parasocially like "what would Jane have to say about this"? It's a horror movie about the making of a horror movie and I'll leave it at that, don't want to spoil anything if you feel compelled to watch.
