Progress report 🫡

Hey everyone! Just wanted to give some work-in-progress updates on my upcoming video, since it's a bit of a doozy. I have the whole thing filmed, so now it's just a matter of editing. Fortunately for you and unfortunately for me as an editor, after my first pass where I just put the best takes together and cut out all the dead space, said video is clocking in at.... 3 HOURS 25 MINUTES.

This makes it my biggest project so far, and as such, it's really taking a toll on my little Surface Pro 5 that I've had since high school. I open up Premiere and just selecting the razor tool, moving clips around, etc. takes ages. I've been meaning to get a new computer for some time now, but always put it off thinking I'd just wait until the next big project was finished, then the next. But seeing as this is my longest video to date, I've decided that I might as well just bite the bullet and get a new machine now. So I did! It should arrive Friday.

I'm guessing I don't even realize the extent to which my old computer + 8gb RAM have been slowing down my workflow in the last couple of years. I'm hopeful that getting a new one with a big RAM upgrade will expedite this video's editing process exponentially, so I think it's a good investment to make now rather than after the video's finished.

Sorry if this is a mundane update, but I just wanted you to know the length of video to expect, where I'm at technologically, and thank you for your support on Patreon!!! Making a big purchase like a laptop is scary, and having a little extra income from Patreon has been so helpful these last few months. The whole point is to be able to put more money and time into these videos, and I can't thank you enough for making that possible. Like I said, I'm hoping it will make my editing a lot faster overall, which would mean I could get more videos out for you.

On an unrelated note, I have watched SO MUCH Grey's Anatomy in the last week. I'm trying to get caught up for the new season. If anyone wants to talk Grey's opinions in the comments, I will be available.

Congrats on the new laptop, that’s so exciting! And omg 3.5 hours of Jane content… maybe life is beautiful after all. I can’t wait to see the finished video!!!

Gabriel Meil

haha then I will try to make that happen from this video on!

Jane Mulcahy

That's an interesting thought, I wonder if Grey's would be gimmicky enough to premiere today and survive. Ikr 21 seasons is wild, finishing the whole show seemed like an impossible task until recently. It helps to have it on in the background while you do other stuff. I find I don't have to be paying THAT close attention to absorb most of what happens on it lmao.

Jane Mulcahy

Yes i love to see my little name for my favorite creators. Whenever u do I will pay my little coins to make me be there 🥺🙏

aiyandi

I've only beheld Grey's Anatomy from afar, because a program with over 400 episodes feels like less of a TV show and more of a SCP to me. The fact that it has 21 seasons is absolutely fascinating, given that most shows made now don't make it past 1 or 2. If Season 1 premiered now on streaming instead of 2005 I don't think it would endure.

Riverdale’s Carrie episode always rubbed additional salt in the wound of the Carrie revival having an incredibly defanged opening number imo. I get why the original version of In was out; you cannot reasonably expect a cast of performers to start a show with a literal high intensity work-out WHILE belting, but going from an illustration of just how demanding misogynistic standards and rigid social enforcement are for teen girls to a park and bark low-energy General Teen-Angst number is a bit of a let-down. …And then you throw in actors who are already trying very hard to act as high schoolers in an oddly self-serious episode of an otherwise campy series.

Actually I don’t think I’d be surprised if Plato’s Anatomy Cave appeared on a wheel of the worst episode as a willfully forgotten product of the 70’s

Air Stratus

Plato’s Anatomy Cave sounds like an unrated tubi original horror movie that spawns a youtube commentary cambrian explosion. Or a really weird history channel faux documentary that dares to ask: Did Plato Eat People?

Air Stratus

okay had a belated response to this: Grey's Cave. Plato's Anatomy. Grey's Plato's Anatomy Cave. coming to ABC this fall

Jane Mulcahy

Yes Sara Ramirez carries that musical episode! And I have been SAYING we needed a Teen Wolf musical episode smh. We know Posey does music! I would've loved to see Scott vent some of those teenage emotions through the power of pop punk. Or musical theater. I think the Next to Normal Riverdale episode was about like... Betty's mom suddenly having a mental break? Like the mom in N2N? Except it's Riverdale so it came out of nowhere and was prompted by something completely ridiculous?

Jane Mulcahy

Grey's had the benefit of having Tony winner Sara Ramirez in the cast so they also give it additional credibility, haha. I think in general it's fun to have Riverdale do shows like Heathers. I love when a teen show has a Put on a Play/Musical plot. But Riverdale also waters down the point of the other musicals they've featured and I'm not a musical purist, but that rubbed me the wrong way. Like isn't Betty's dad a serial killer or something LOL how is that related to n2n. (And now I'm sad that Teen Wolf never had a school drama plot, but maybe we were all spared at the same time.)

andie bansil

Haha honestly as hokey as the musical episode is, I have to respect how dead serious it takes itself. Like there's something very endearing to me about that. Most shows go for a comedic angle in a musical episode, sometimes overly self-aware/tongue in cheek, or worst of all, like Riverdale's musical episodes, so clearly think they're 'cool' that it makes them uncool. I can't stand Riverdale's musical episodes because they don't feel like naive camp to me, they feel like they THINK they're being incredibly cool and trendy and hip, and that in itself is annoying and feels pretentious to me (coupled with how they use the genuine emotion of good musical theater songs to try to inject cheap emotion into what are actually shallow and only tenuously connected storylines on the show, like Next to Normal -> Betty's family drama or Hedwig -> Kevin being gay or something??). The musical sequences on that show feel like fan edits to me or something, just adding music to make the characters look hot and cool and show off a song the writers like, not for the purpose of good storytelling. Grey's on the other hand totally went for it emotionally, without any fear of being perceived as cringe or cheesy. And while the end result is sadly very cringe and cheesy, I think that's more respectable! It's the theater kid thing to do! It's sincere! You've gotta be sincere! In the words of Conrad Birdie!

Jane Mulcahy

i havent seen kids of degrassi street yet, but I watched Junior High and High for the first time a couple years ago. I kiinda recommend them?? they're obviously so so so dated, but they feel incredibly authentic. plus it's fun to see the characters who were on tng (like spike, snake, and raditch) and look out for parallels, tropes, etc. that carried over into tng (like people watching stuff through windows, constant events, super awkward cold opens, student musicians)

raychle

oh and I haven't thought to do a Patron scroll before because I wasn't sure if it was something people cared about. But if you'd like that, I can make it happen!

Jane Mulcahy

I think it has an Intel Iris XE. I don't know shit about graphics cards tbh, but I don't edit with very large files or use many intense effects so I think it should be fine. I don't have the funds to get the absolute best PC for video editing, I just wanted to get something efficient enough that will work for me. I went for 32 gb RAM this time so I'm hoping that will make the biggest difference.

Jane Mulcahy

Would love to know your thoughts on the musical episode as someone who is a theatre kid interested in musical episodes of shows I don't watch. Buying a new computer is SO scary. I've been an adult for how long and my finger still hovers over the purchase button. Looking forward to the new video though!

andie bansil

Excited about your new PC! What graphics card is in it? Also, do you have any plans to do a Patron scroll @ the end of your vids? I wanna be eternalized in your filmography 🙏

So true, I just got to season 19 and I do kind of like that they introduced a new batch of underdog interns because I think it brings some parts of the show back to that lighter, 'characters in situations' formula. As far as unhealthy relationships I will say the Levi/Nico relationship in the later seasons was PISSING ME OFF! That was my 'get a job, stay away from him' relationship. Like Nico was the most toxic, emotionally stunted, manipulative guy and the show didn't even seem aware of it?? They just kept having Levi come crawling back and making it seem romantic. So annoying to watch. Anyway I agree on Owen. I actually liked him and Cristina at first, I thought they had a lot of chemistry. But by the time he's choking her in his sleep it's like okay... maybe work on yourself first and stay away lol. I was even more annoyed during the 3 or 4 seasons that Owen and Amelia were stuck together. They were stuck in this never ending cycle where like every episode they would make plans together or something and then by the end of the episode they would be screaming at each other about how they weren't good for each other. At a certain point, I do not care! Just break up if you hate each other so much! I've come to really like Amelia, but only after she was finally free of Owen lol.

Jane Mulcahy

haha I saw the first notification and then your comment had disappeared- don't let god silence you!! thank you sooooooo much I love that!! honestly even I still haven't watched all of Junior High and I haven't even touched High or Kids of Degrassi Street. I'm such a fake fan

Jane Mulcahy

I know this was so long ago but I still yearn for the Callie Arizona Alex Izzie era of the show where there were so many "but what if there was a g-g-ghost haunting the hospital... Just kidding guys! 😉" episodes. It was truly a 'putting characters in situations' type show at that point and I miss that. I'm still tuning in but I feel like they've yet to find that sweet spot of two-three DEEPLY unhealthy relationships that are totally compelling anyways. Though one qualm I had with that era is that SO MUCH of Christina's screen time was devoted to Owen of all people. it was like. Get a job... Stay away from her... I do still encourage Ellen pompeo to get that bag however

[typed this comment out once and lost it, then started to type it again and hit send early. i think god is trying to silence me -_-] very very excited for your next big video. i've been spreading your videos like gospel, and one of my friends recently started watching your backlog, then messaged me to ask if we can watch ALL OF DEGRASSI TOGETHER before she watches any of your degrassi videos. we just started tng, then we'll do next class, junior high, high, and kids of degrassi street in that order. i've never watched degrassi witth anyone so i'm so so excited. so yeah, thank you for making wonderful content and genuinely bringing so much joy into my life.

raychle

Congrats on the new computer! Upgrades are always scary, but hopefully it will make your work processes a lot more manageable. That time stamp is ominous and exciting in equal measure— I look forward to the mysterious project’s reveal! Sadly, Grey’s Anatomy always managed to pass through my brain without making any stops at Long-Term Memory Storage, so I don’t have anything to contribute there. I look forward to spectating on everyone else’s opinions devoid of context, though! Plato’s cave is my favorite hang-out spot
