What I'm working on - June 2024

Hello again Patrons. Boy am I glad to be done watching Teen Wolf. I got some new signups from my last video, so thank you for that, and if you're new here, welcome! This is the part of the Patreon where I tell you what I'm up to for the next few weeks.

My main focus this month is my Sterek video. I'm in the process of editing, and right now she's about 55 minutes long. Why do I keep doing this to myself?? I'm about 14 minutes into the edit; the video will probably be out in a couple of weeks.

^^ When they ask you how you are and you just have to say that you're fine when you're not really fine but you just can't get into it because they would never understand

There are some things in it I'm really happy with, especially my analysis of why I think Sterek became so popular, so I just hope it resonates with people and doesn't get caught up in fandom discourse or whatever. Something I say early on in the video is that I'm something of a Sterek centrist (lol), and that my goal is not to pursuade people to like or dislike the ship, but more to get to the bottom of why people shipped it in the first place.

I admit I'm finding it a little hard to stay motivated to work on the Sterek vid, maybe just because I'm ready to move on from Teen Wolf. But that just makes it all the more exciting to think about what I'll do in the post-Teen Wolf era. I'm thinking maybe the Wrong video next? I've been promising to make it for ages, so I figure I might as well knock it out while I'm on this roll of finally finishing long-awaited projects. There were 25 Wrong movies when I first started developing the video, and I believe there's been a 26th released since then. And a spinoff miniseries called Keeping Up With the Joneses. So like. I can't not include that.

I did watch 25/26 of the Wrong movies in the last year or two, but they're so generic and similar to each other that many of them have melted down into a nondescript sludge in my brain, so I think I'll have to rewatch all of them to refresh my memory. Maybe I'll do a format similar to my Lifetime cheerleader video where I sort them into qualitative categories in order to spend less time talking about the ones that are so forgettable they're barely worth mentioning.^^ A small sampling of David DeCoteau's glittering filmography

I know I definitely want to do a segment about David DeCoteau, who directs all of the Wrong movies, because he is a legendary (derogatory) Z-movie director. Specifically, he has a penchant for weird homoerotic no-budget slop where a bunch of shirtless guys run around in the woods for 90 minutes. I think Redlettermedia have covered some of his work... Plus there's a frequent writer of Wrong movies, Adam Rockoff, who I happen to have personal one-sided beef with. Rockoff wrote a rather popular book on the slasher genre that I tried in good faith to use in my research for my undergrad thesis paper on slasher films. I ended up being extremely turned off by his dismissive tone towards the established academic literature on the genre and especially his dismissal of the formative gender-based readings of the genre (largely by female scholars, of course). It was ignorant and condescending and weird. So Adam Rockoff is no friend of mine. I WILL be coming up with some scathing puns about his surname to use in the video.

^^ Adam Rockoff's stupid dumb slasher book that sucks

Beyond that, I'd like to make a Patreon bonus video some time this month as well, partly because I don't have a Patreon-exclusive section planned for the Sterek video. Maybe a silly movie I've been into lately, or something more esoteric? Something behind the scenes like videos I've thought about doing but haven't made? I'll keep thinking about it, but that will be my second priority after the Sterek vid.

Thanks for your support this month and stay tuned!!

MINE WAS ALSO STUCKY LMAO yeah idk why we were all delulu into thinking that DISNEY of all companies would let a gay ship happen but when I tell you I was so deep into the stucky shit it was.... interesting lol. I was in high school tho so def dont have the excuse of being in middle school. I had a feeling u were a stucky gal tho. shit maybe we crossed paths on Tumblr

Oh my god. I was wondering why every single person in that movie was lit from below, but I couldn't begin to theorize why. I really do recommend the first five minutes of the movie for a TRULY incredible premise and an almost too-sincere scream-singing-in-the-car sequence. That said, I have to repeatedly stress that I Cannot vouch for the rest of the movie, since I've never made it past the inciting incident.

I'm laughing just looking at the posters for Runaway Christmas Bride... and yeah I think one of DeCoteau's big stylistic giveaways is the weird bad lighting- overexposure, awful day for night, and (in his Lifetime movies at least) he has this habit of lighting villains from below? Presumably to make them look more villainous? But it always looks really terrible and amateurish

Wait sorry hang on. I just fully processed that Rockoff spoke dismissively about gendered readings of slashers. When he writes Lifetime movies???? Dude. Know where your bread is buttered.

Excited at the promise of The Wrong Video at long last, but even more excited at the promise of a David DeCoteau segment. I have watched exactly 1/20th of one of his movies: Runaway Christmas Bride. What little I saw was enthralling. The attempt to feign winter by overexposing every shot. The strange and off-putting cuts. The inexplicable inclusion of a group of youths who may or may not be teens. Every once in a while I will watch the first five minutes of the movie and then continue scrolling through Tubi. The only reason I know he directed Runaway Christmas Bride is because the last time I put it on, my friend shrieked “THIS IS A DAVID DECOTEAU JOINT?” followed by “oh yeah. There’s his gay guys” upon the entrance of the aforementioned youths. Also excited to hear you rip into a film theorist again! That’s always a treat. Good luck making your way out of the woods of beacon hills! The sooner you escape this piece of media about shirtless men running through the woods, the sooner you can discuss different media about shirtless men running through the woods!

I remember being put off by Teen Wolf through via osmosis on tumblr in the early days because i was so annoyed with the sterek fervor! Obviously I can see where the initial shipping came from, esp since I put on my homo goggles pretty often when watching shows and movies, but it was so wild to experience in real time. So I'm obviously looking forward to this video. I've missed the Lifetime videos so I'm excited for whenever The Wrong video comes out. Godspeed...

I appreciate it!! welcome. idk what your ships were but I hear you because when I was in middle school one of my tumblr fandom phases was Stucky omg. that's difficult to confess. but in my defense CA:TWS was pretty homoerotic and my child mind foolishly had faith that an evil megacorporation would eventually make my random gay ship canon

if anything, Bollywood would be a good idea for Patreon content because it tends not to do very well on my channel... thanks for the suggestion!

Jane Mulcahy

Oooh, I forgot all about The Wrong Video you started working on ages ago; I'll definitely be seated for that. As for other topics of interest, it's been a hot minute since you've talked about Bollywood. Maybe something weird and campy has come out in the months since?

Finn

very excited to see you talk about a ship ive heard much about but never interacted with for 2 hours!!!! in 2016 I was busy pretending that mcu characters were in love with each other (and gay) so I never really got into teen wolf lol, still this series has been one of my favs outside of... well all of your videos? also, im a new member! youre actually the only person I support on Patreon, literally made an account just to sub lol

elipeeli

It's wild to start watching them in bulk because you realize they're generally much WORSE in quality than the average Lifetime movie, which is saying something

Jane Mulcahy

There's something really intriguing about the Wrong movies. The franchise is so large and so terrible, and DeCoteau is so weirdly iconic. So, I'm really excited for The Wrong Video.
