Teen Wolf video part 2 - Patreon exclusive section

Comments

it's just so funny because when I first read your comment I was like "wow fandoms are so crazy, there's no way that's going to happen to ME" and now.... here we are.

Jane Mulcahy

im very late but omg taylor patreon comment mention in teen wolf vid!!! LOL im glad the thiam train made a stop at the Jane station; bless up.

I assume the writers just didn't want to bother figuring out the details of that, for all we know maybe he was paying child support all those years, but it could've really helped the character's likability to at least see him OFFER to help them out when it's been established that they're struggling to pay the bills

Jane Mulcahy

ikr it's kind of hard to believe omegaverse came from Supernatural and not Teen Wolf lol

Jane Mulcahy

Yeah, Superwholock might have gotten the ball rolling on the omegaverse but if you held a gun to my head and forced me to craft a franchise perfectly tailored for omegaverse, I couldn't do better than Teen Wolf. I don't think it could have played out any other way; btw I don't even hate omegaverse that much but here it's just... inescapable.

Finn

I don't doubt that, but I have seen a good deal of bizarre TW fics out there, I feel like it would take a lot of faze me. The omegaverse stuff alone, that you can't help but occasionally stumble upon in EVERY FANDOM but especially Teen Wolf, definitely gave me a tolerance for weird nasty stuff from an early age unfortunately. But also luckily for me I'm in the minority who liked the finale 😭

Jane Mulcahy

Your new video inspired me to join the Patreon. Especially since I've rewatched the first part several times. I was NOT disappointed.

Honestly I have to wonder if there was an out-of-court settlement of some kind, with Melissa getting a rawer deal in the long-run. There are some cases where one parent gets the house in return for the other parent paying less in child support. Unfortunately, this happens most often when there’s a greater need or more desperation for separation on one parent’s part. All this to say I wouldn’t put it past Scott’s father to manipulate the system to his advantage. Like you said, he’d be used to that

im the child of divorced parents and like, even if you ARE unemployed... you still have to pay child support, not as much, but you still have to pay LOL. they're basically like "get a job u bum u have children". the amount is pretty low/ based off wage, the fact that Scotts dad just.... skirted away from child support?? like r they not legally divorced???? literally not paying child support will put u in JAIL???? FBI agents once again proving they're criminals!!!!

Beware if you go onto Ao3 to sate your disappointment with the show's finale; there's a lot of amazing fics on there, but also a LOT of filth. Excluding the 2 most popular ships is well-advised if you don't want to be haunted.

Finn

Glad to offer some reassurance! I clicked around an inflation calculator, and it looks like he’d be making the equivalent of 100K no matter what, especially looking at the 2013 numbers. It really does have heinous implications for the child support situation, though. Someone make this horrid man pay alimony

Air Stratus

Man I hope any fans reflecting the weird cop stuff were just naive kids who didn't know any better, otherwise yikes! I think there's even a moment on the show where Stiles is judging a kid who's a criminal and one of his friends is like 'how many tickets would you have if your dad hadn't gotten rid of them for you?' and the answer was some absurd number. It's so ingrained in pop culture too. I'm currently really into a certain procedural show and it's really fun except for all of the copaganda!

Jane Mulcahy

Omg this is awesome! Thank you for confirming my suspicions because I did see some lower estimates online so I hoped I wasn't talking out of my ass. Honestly even if he was making under 100k, if he's a single guy paying no child support he should be sending them SOMETHING. I just couldn't believe they implied that he was letting Melissa provide for Scott completely singlehandedly.

Now that I’ve finally finished the video + bonus content— Wolf Girl Summer was my first encounter with Teen Wolf outside of 2013 tumblr gifsets, and I had a bit of a parallel journey to yours in fandom anthropology aka poking at AO3 with a stick. The thing that really struck me was that the weird attachment to and glorification of cops in the show seemed to be mirrored back in the fan content. Many other things were, of course, but nothing quite as disturbing as the echoed sentiments of Stiles’ dad being ready and willing to destroy evidence and cover things up, or casual jokes about using parking violations as a way to vent frustration. WEIRD STUFF! Who knows, maybe there’s an essay about MTV’s Teen Wolf taking the original movie’s themes of toxic masculinity and then choosing to lean in, full throttle. I know you got some flack from people accusing you of critiquing media that girls like, but aside from the prescient rebuttals you already made, I think those comments ignore a lot of the heavily gendered aspects of the show itself, including the narrative depictions and use of cops (and guns and cars and muscle men and…)

Finally joined the patreon in order to 1) thank you for hours of content over the past couple of years 2) learn about nepotism and hear your fanfic reviews and 3) elaborate on the money scott's deadbeat dad is most likely making. Tbh I'd already decided to subscribe, but the deadbeat dad salary exposition was what made me pause the video and launch into action. So! You can check U.S. federal payscales through OPM.gov, which breaks down the average pay for federal employees in different localities. Thing is, pay tends to go up depending on how long someone's worked in a position, and the salary for feds is bumped at a pretty consistent rate. I'm assuming Northern California is still where he lives, so I'm staring down this page to calculate how much money Scott's dad is making: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/pdf/2024/SF%20(LEO).pdf Based on what I've been able to find, it takes about 18 years to hit step 10, and he could easily have been a fed for that long. Supposing he has, that means he'd be getting about 109,593 USD a year. Even if we're using 2017 rates, he'd still be earning almost 90,000 a year. Either way, he should be giving Scott's mom WAY more child support. Edit: While poking around the website I found a calculator, which seems more useful than the table, actually. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2017/law-enforcement-officer-salary-calculator/
