What I'm working on - March 2024

Greetings, Patrons. To any newcomers, welcome! I got quite a few new signups from my latest video, which is awesome. Apparently the audience for werewolf-related YouTube content really is vast, and for that I'll always be grateful. If you're new here, one thing I like to do on this nascent Patreon is give updates and spoilers on videos-in-progress.

So what's in the cards for the next few months? I actually recorded a video yesterday after feverishly cranking out another way-too-long script over the course of a few days. I managed to pare it down to ONLY 17 pages. Are you proud of me??

The video in question is on....... The recent 'Holdovers' plagiarism allegations! If you haven't seen the news, British screenwriter Simon Stephenson recently accused the director (Alexander Payne) and screenwriter (David Hemingson) of The Holdovers of plagiarizing his unproduced screenplay, Frisco. This was all detailed in a Variety article that came out the day before the Oscars, where The Holdovers had several nominations. (Article link)

If you follow me on Twitter, you'll already have seen why this interested me: At first glance, the article seems to present a pretty damning case. But once you read the supporting document Stephenson sent to the WGA to make his case, and especially if you happen to read the screenplays of both The Holdovers and Frisco, the allegations immediately fall apart. They are completely different scripts, Stephenson's case is ridiculous, and the Variety article is incredibly misleading. And yet, there still appear to be plenty of people online who are taking his claims at face value. SO. I thought it would be worth making a video that puts everything in one place and breaks down Stephenson's document and arguments in detail. I think it's pretty entertaining stuff, hopefully others will agree. The video should be out before the end of the month. FYI I'm not planning to do a Patreon-exclusive excerpt for this one, it's just not really that kind of video, but I'll make sure to provide other types of exclusive content this month.

Other than that, yes, the Teen Wolf video IS still technically chugging along. If you're someone who's been waiting for the last Teen Wolf vid with bated breath, I am truly sorry for how much it's gotten away from me. I'm on season 5 now and the 24 episodes might as well be 2400. It's a slog. I'm in the trenches. It's weird, I thought season 4 was hard to get through, but in hindsight, it was pretty okay compared to this. Maybe it's the lack of Derek so far in season 5 that's bumming me out? But I think it's more than that. It's like it's missing something quintessential, maybe the human element (lol). More of my notes from this season:

I have to be honest, I'm not feeling very jazzed about making this vid. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to DO IT, because I HONOR MY COMMITMENTS, but god, remind me never to do a video in parts again. I'm going to try to keep myself engaged in the project by making this part a little more idiosyncratic-- Instead of doing lengthy recaps, this time around I'll maybe do a short review of each season and then fill in the rest of the vid with tangents I'm more interested in. So far my ideas are 'Why is Sterek?', 'Script doctor/things I would have changed', 'An official apology to Scott McCall', 'Bad movies starring Teen Wolf actors'... I don't know guys, I'm really grasping at straws here.

Anyway, stay tuned for the Holdovers video, and keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I attempt the Herculean task of watching a few seasons of a werewolf show for children.

Thanks so much for your support this month!

yeah it definitely was season 6 because Theo gets a redemption arc and they become friends. I hope im remembering it correctly and that thiam gives everything I remember it giving cause it has been a while since I’ve seen it—but then again, I feel like every time I revisit an old ship and am like “I definitely was overthinking it and it probably wasn’t that sexually charged/queer coded” it ALWAYS is lol. either way, I hope my baddies at least will help you get through the last bit of teen wolf with something to look forward to🫡

Thanks! You're the second person to mention Theo/Liam, I honestly wasn't really aware of that ship back when I watched the show as a kid (I think I had stopped keeping up with Teen Wolf by the time Theo was even introduced). And now I'm super intrigued bc I'm currently on season 5 and it doesn't seem like there's been much ship fodder between Liam and Theo? Maybe most of it is from later in the season or in season 6? I'm excited to find out! I feel like if I spend time talking about Sterek in the video I might as well look into the other popular non-canon ships.

Jane Mulcahy

I don’t know if this will even be something that you decide to cover in the video but if you do I am SUPER excited to hear your opinions on the Liam/Theo “thiam” ship. I remember absolutely losing my mind over them in 2016, and I feel like they have a very specific niche of people that talk about them cause I really can’t find much of them besides the obvious source material and ao3. It may just be hearsay but supposedly there was a scene where they were scripted to kiss in an elevator but scratched it last minute?? they definitely have a very intense dynamic. Even one of their main relationship plot points is that Theo is an anchor for Liam’s anger, seemingly mirroring season 1 Scott and Allison??? … LOL but anyways, I really loved your most recent video about cursed and honestly all of your content is super interesting to me. I went to my first two years of undergrad for acting but always felt so far removed from any film knowledge so it’s really cool to hear your opinions and honestly I learn something new every time :) <3

taylor ice

it literally only exist because there was a like of gay couples in s6 and people latched on to the enemies dynamic they got, and i respect it also lmao

nei vilde

I've seen in the past that Liam/Theo was a ship, I honestly don't understand why because to me they are two of the most boring, borderline interchangeable characters on the show. But then again I respect the hustle and will never tell people not to make random non canon gay ships

Jane Mulcahy

my sterek rant is why is sterek, when isaac is right there, essentially serves the same purpose as derek in his dynamic with stiles, but is his actual age. like if you were GONNA queerbait me anyway, do it with the age-appropriate kid lmao

nei vilde

this is just a little fun fact for you, maybe more relevant for s6, although the characters are still there in s5, just that there still like an active liam/theo fandom, like recently -ish (like a few months ago) i kept getting edits of them on tiktok and was like woah is there still people into this, and yeah i went on all the sites and yeah new fanfics still popping up. i was like good for them, they kinda work

nei vilde

I am definitely interested in The Idea of You! at first I thought maybe there was potential for an 'is it fanfic' deep dive, but on doing a little research I learned that the author is pretty open about the Harry Styles inspo. she's also 49, which I think makes it a slightly different situation than your average After-style wattpad schlock... maybe if I watch the movie/read the book and have thoughts I could find an angle. and PLEASE don't tell me it gets worse than season 5. I refuse to believe it

Jane Mulcahy

Are you planning to cover The Idea of You? Everything about it screams sold-to-1d fanfic. As for Teen wolf... yeah, season 5 is exhausting to sit through; tbh after they wrote Isaac out watching the later seasons was a chore, but not even Arden Cho can rescue this season. What if I told you the worst is still to come?

Finn

I'm glad she won the oscar!

Jane Mulcahy

Haven’t seen the Holdovers yet but can’t wait for your analysis of the controversy! Thanks for all your work, Jane, and thanks for the update.

Isabella

How amazing was Da’Vine in The Holdovers?

Todd Schulbaum

Honestly all the werewolf content you've been making is so fun. I grew up watching cursed the unrated version as a kid, so when netflix a few years back had the theatrical cut, I was genuinely like wtf is this? Keep up the great work. 🖤🧡❤️‍🔥

Khol Ellsworth

Oh Ok cool, I'm gonna try to check it out soon

Roderick Hare

Bad movies starring Teen Wolf actors is my dream video right behind bad movies starring Degrassi actors 5.

LMfan

I think it's pretty good! It's definitely a little formulaic and sentimental, so some might find it corny. But I think it's well written enough to pull it off

Jane Mulcahy

I was big into TW back in the day! Read fic, cosplayed etc, so I have fandom Scott goggles on and I totally acknowledge that. He's unfortunately a character who clearly was not the writer team's fave despite being the main character, especially since Dylan was such a clear talent right off the bat! I always appreciated his earnestness and desire to do the right thing. And his himbo attitude is such a funny contrast to their over the top villains

andie bansil

I haven't seen the Holdovers but I've heard about this and this sounds insane, this whole thing makes me interested to check out The Holdovers

Roderick Hare

haha idk what it is, but I feel like as soon as I started season 4 I suddenly liked him a lot more. Maybe it's because as the show gets more and more convoluted I'm more appreciative of his simpleton presence? Especially in season 5, everything feels so large-scale and out of touch with anything relatable, but Scott is still just a dumb but well-intentioned guy who doesn't understand why everything's gotten so complicated. As the viewer, I can relate! Plus early on I learned a little more about Tyler Posey and now feel kind of bad for being so harsh on him.

Jane Mulcahy

The Scott McCall Hive is looking forward to this
