There is a main plot involving finding out the player's identity, but it mostly takes a backseat to the miniplots at the moment! Interesting, I'll check out fabled lands!

Either way is fine. One of my favorite paper/pencil choose-your-own-adventure-style gamebook series is Fabled Lands, which is mostly "character decides what if any adventures/encounters with which to engage."
