Tree of Life - Book 1 pg. 70.

"What if Mira was in Nigel's position" is an imponderable. The Tree has some vision into the future, and again, probably needs Nigel to be in a position where he can do the most good. I am still working from the position that the Tree wants to defeat the Chaos, and protect as many people as she can. She's certainly hiding something, and certainly taking Nigel's vision is controversial. But if you recall, as she did so, she said "It's time to look with your heart instead of your eyes." The Tree needs him to stop looking at the world as he thinks he sees it. At this point, is he going to get over himself and see what the Tree needs him to see, or spend the whole time dwelling on how the world has wronged him and focusing only on that? Sure, initially, he's going to be laser focused on her. But later? I suppose we'll all see.

And taking his sight will only make him even angrier at her. If she wants him to realize who is actually at fault, taking his sight was a stupid thing to do because it only laser focuses him on her even more. I bet you if Mira was in Nigel's position for whatever reason she would not have done the same to her.

Even though you replied to a two month old comment I'm gonna reply in the interest of speculation: Don't you think the Tree saw this? She does have some limited vision into the future, so she probably saw some of this happening. As I mentioned earlier, she probably needs Nigel to be in some position, and this is her way of getting him there. The Tree's actions were harsh, but he's been so mad at her for, basically, his parents unpersoning him because she didn't accept his first and only attempt to be a guardian. Which, crucially, she encouraged him to try again, and he was excited to do so! But then his parents basically dropped him as a failed child, and he ran away from home and grew bitter at the Tree instead of the correct targets, his parents.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. It was beyond fuqed up. She wouldn't have done it to any of the others, especially Mira, if they were like Nigel. She better give it back back before she dies if Nigel's dreams are any indication of her future fate.

BahamutsChosen

Which did more harm than good. Taking his sight would, and did, only made him sink deeper into his hole.

I still think the Goddess is trying to save the world from Chaos. She knew enough that these are the people she needed, that they're not ready yet, but have to be in order to save what's left of the world. And if she's wrong about Nigel -- who I believe is legitimately angry but has misdirected the anger -- then the world falls to Chaos. So if she's wrong, the bad guys win.

Mira superimposed on the page just sells that expression. The higher detail is such a treat.

Nick R. Kupila

Oh absolutely. And personally, I hope it does. If anything can strike the Goddess at her core and teach her the error of her own stupidity, it would be the backfiring of her intentions and Nigel being proven right about her

FurryBunnyj

I'm betting the Tree feels desperate. She knows that Nigel is going to be a part of the solution, and probably taking his sight was her ploy to get him where he needs to be, on a maturity basis. It has a very strong chance to backfire.

This feels like a flash of who Mira will become over the course of this. But it also shows that despite being brought up in pretty charmed circumstances, she was close enough to the Tree to divine some of what the Tree was going through. Probably saw more than the Tree necessarily wanted to show intentionally. The thing we gotta remember regarding Nigel is that he has a legitimate grievance, but it's misplaced, and the people he has legitimate grievance against are dead. He's gonna hafta find closure within himself, and right now he's too blind to it. Which is probably why the Tree took his literal sight.

pj wolf

Mira's perception of reality is gonna come down crashing soon and it ain't gonna be pretty.

StumpedMoose

It will be so hard for them all to get yourselfs together. But they need to keep their faith, because only this can help them.

Serico

Okay, that's it! Nigel, your parents did a nasty thing. But your life since then has been nothing but one long temper tantrum. You have done nothing to earn your position as a Knight. As for no free will and suicide missions, I seem to remember somebody breaking into the temple to become a knight. What, exactly did you think Knights were going to be doing with the Chaos closing in? Grow up.

Abbie Hunt

What Nigel needs is his sight restored. She had no right to do that

FurryBunnyj

Tbh this trip will be good for Nigel, he really needs to vent.

Myhairhasamindofitsown

He's such a slouchy boi And he needs a serious hug
