Tree of Life - Book 1 pg. 56.

It must be mind control powder.

Erika Spooner

Hmm...Luna has been dealing with people for hundreds or thousands of years and raised Mira and Chili. It's really hard for me to believe that she does not know exactly what is going to happen when she tells this group "But whatever happens, you must never look inside it."

Abbie Hunt

It's a bag of Luna's finest hash.

The14th

People say Nigel is gonna open it, but I'm actually gonna put my bet on Miraelle opening it. She's seen as a nepo baby and will probably be challenged (most likely by Nigel) to be independent of her.

Well. she just said they couldn't *look* inside. That wont be a problem with Nigel.

The Tree didn't ruin Nigel's life. Nigel kinda ruined his own life, with a heavy assist from his parents. Yes, the Tree could have told Nigel what he needed to cross that last little bit to become a guardian... but also, the Tree told Nigel, straight up, to apply again. She didn't say "no" she said "not yet." Nigel's parents were the ones to hear "no" and consequently, disown him. They stopped acknowledging his existence since he was a "failure" and put all their attention into their "spare," who they'd previously pretty much been neglecting up until then. Having literally lost the love of the people who'd raised him and literally fawned over him, Nigel took out his frustrations on the Tree, tracing that line to her even though she only said "not yet." Being somewhat clairvoyant, the Tree probably knew that Nigel would be needed. And making him a Knight now, AFTER taking his sight because **he is refusing to see the true origins of his rage and resentment**, means that she's desperate and is putting her chips into who Nigel will be rather than who he is right now. The Tree is not innocent here, but there's nowhere near enough blame being placed on his parents, who have passed away probably to the chaos, then on the Tree herself.

pj wolf

Someone’s gonna open it. Probably Nigel.

"utmost importance", long and dangerous journey", "on foot only" (?!?!), "never look inside the pouch!". Luna just wants them to fail before they even leave town. XD

We forget: Nigel is currently blind. He can 'look' inside that bag as much as he wants to, the others just can't do so. Seconded on the crowd just walking away though, these people are leaving way too quickly and quietly after the last great hope against the encroaching hordes of chaos and corruption turns out to be a blind neighbourhood thief, a good intentioned pyromaniac, a child that's gained her position through nepotism, another thief and a strong man. If things have gotten that desperate and the crowd has had their faith shaken so much then I would expect a LOT more pushback, even over the words of the elder. And I am also really, REALLY surprised to see Nigel struck dumb here. The Tree ruined his life through her silence, then took his sight when he finally had a chance to get his own back, then told him to try harder when he finally got a chance to express his anger at her and now he's quiet? The boy should be screaming his head off like a possessed howler monkey because this should be the final insult. He was made to think he was the best, then cast aside. He lost everything, his family's love, his home, his comfy lifestyle and now, NOW after finally taking his sight and hauling him up in front of the crowd the Tree decides he's finally worthy. There's no way his anger should be dissipating that easily, if anything he should be practically frothing at the mouth with unrestrained rage and contempt at the sheer gall of the being who (from his viewpoint at least) has utterly ruined his life. The only way that Nigel's sudden silence would make sense is if there's a panel or two that we've missed during his stay in prison with Tristan that gives him some kind of character development to make him okay with this, though I could also see him going along with this quest if only to mess with the others at every turn and actively try and sabotage the quest. I could also see him just giving up on it entirely and trying to abandon the group from the off and honestly I would prefer seeing this option, with him calling out the Tree for exactly what she's done to him and saying he'd rather live the rest of his days without sight than lowering himself to make a deal with the being who's blighted so much of his existence. Here's hoping that's what happens!

Revakara

I'm just gonna put my preemptive "Goddammit, Nigel" right here.

Gwen The Goblin

I think its a little unnerving to see the crowd just casually walk away after all the ramble that was slowly building up throughout the ceremony. Are they afraid of evoking Luna's wrath by questioning her or have they've come into terms that they're lives are entirely dependent on her decisions. Either way, its safe to say that they're faith in Luna will be constantly challenged with the guardians as they travel across lands with their unpeepable goodie bag.

StumpedMoose

Nigel is totally looking in that thing :P

MountainGoat

Appropriately chastised. The crowd departs.

Parker Trotter

Damn, they've all calmed down this easily. But I don't know of they'll have full faith in Luna after this

DiDiDi-X

Well that de-escalated quickly.

Ded Otter Man

You may carry, but you cannot touch. You may wonder, but you cannot learn. You may do, but you cannnot ask why.
