Tree of Life - Book 1 pg. 39.

In-universe: - Do you really think he was in a position to hear anything she had to say at any point about his failings? Assuming she *does* have that heightened perception, do you think she'd know that? - If she steps in and forces any mortal to do anything, is she any better than Rah'jan? - THe parents are horrible, but is her place in the panthion justice or retribution? Out of univrese: On a meta level, this is the problem with any god - if they have phenominal cosmic power, why can't they just use it to solve all problems, or at least all the problems that violate their own self-interest? This is colloquially known as the Problem of Evil. IF gods exist, and they're benevolent and powerful, why does evil exist? But - consider any god. Fictional, current, or past - isn't this the same fundamental issue with any of them? It's the Problem of Evil in another form. For gods like the one in this story, flaws are part fo their character - Greek Gods never had the problem of evil, as they were as flawed and elemental as the humans that worshipped them. We have no proof that this god, our Tree, is omnicient - just that she cares, she has a certain grade of power, and she's doing her best (which is certainly at a higher level than her followers). That gods can make mistakes, that gods can dither or worry or fail to intervene when necessary? I think that makes for an interesting exercise in power. But - I think we've established that gods in this world are more like Greek gods than the modern concept of a 'god'. Luna isn't perfect. She's doing her best. She's benevolent and hopeful - and while she does operate at a higher level, she's more like us than she's not. She's going to try to help Nigel - her methods may be inscrutable, and even flawed, but she'll do her best.

Shannon J. Lane

Luna strike's me as a very "self-aware" god, in the sense that she knows what kind of role and position she holds in the society and the world at large. She knows the huge amount of authority she could have if she wanted it, but she seems to actively defuge abusing her position evne if doing so could yeild a net positive. I don't think there is a nefarious plan, at least on her part, in fact, she seems very relatively straight forward with things, even when she's veing vage she tends to point to a concrete direction. She did nothing with Nigel or Tristan because she believed that the best outcome of the situation would come to pass, but her lact of asertivity ended up costing her that end goal.

Myhairhasamindofitsown

I will hold my final verdict for when we see what her plans actually are, but at this point I gotta say...Luna is striking me as sus. So far, as fictional gods go, she is your typical physical god. Powers above any mere mortal, immortality, probably sensory abilities that let her perceive reality (including time and space possibly) on a level no mere mortal (or even unusual mortal) can. She's also not the highest power in the setting, as there seems to be entities greater than her or here colleagues (or Rah'jan, if we assume the corrupting Chaos not to be an aspect of Rah'Jan, but more like he's its representive or Avatar). Taking this into account, there's some weird behavior on her part. She acts benevolent and motherly, she can see into people's hearts and minds and tries to be there for her subjects. She is not incomprehensible to a mortals mind and in fact, very mortal like in the way she presents herself and she can also die, assumedly, since other gods like her perished, so she has a grasp on the concept of personal finality/mortality. So the simple question is: Why did she not prevent the injustices that happened to Nigel, which drove him to despise her and those who serve/worship her, and moreso may drive him into the hands of her arch-enemy? She definitely had the capabilities. I am not talking about making Nigel a Guardian despite his lack of "Selflessness", but say...spilling the beans to him about why he wasn't ready, instead of acting mysterious and aloof. Offering him actual guidance instead of vagueness. Or talking to his parents about their misguided and harmful way of parenting. All within her capabilities, and most likely not outside of whatever boundaries or rules these gods set for themselves. There is the possibility that this is part of her Xanatos gambit and she NEEDS to spurn Nigel to set him onto a dark path that somehow will end up defeating Chaos and Rah'Jan. God's ways are mysterious and all that. But that would be balanced on the idea that the different deities have the power to glimpse into the future or perceive possible fates, something that hasn't been seen up to this point. Again, we are only in chapter 1 so far, so we only gotten a glimpse into this tale. Could be this is all a rouse, together with Rah'Jans conversion of a former Guardian, to make us believe the goods guys are the actual bad guys and in the end it turns out it was all 5D space-time chess being played and the good guys are good. Maybe none of the gods and their higher-up entities are good and are in fact all self-serving, like in Elden Ring. But so far, Luna seems very suspicious to me.

Busterdrag

By the simple law of "This is the artist's favorite character" he's not gonna die. But yeah, definitely seeing some "she needs him for who he will be, not as he is" vibes. Or this is a giant fake out and Nigel is gonna die. Either way I'm here for it

pj wolf

He will not be in jail for long, cause Tristan is already there and I believe when Tristan will escape, he will obviously bring Nigel with him.

Grog

Who says anything about a prison under a church? We don't know where this prison would take place yet.

Joseph Purves

Dunno about you my local church doesnt have a prison under it but I guess to each their own religion :-P

Ghilz

No, she isn't.

Joseph Purves

You had me invested but now I'm REALLY invested, can't wait to see where this goes!

Beatleboy62

Waiting on revelation. The build on this is great. "Your big day..." "Won't be there long..." The feeling of there being no time left. She needs Nigel. He is a necessary piece of her plans to fight what is killing the world. But she needs him as he will be, not as he is. As a man capable of at least seeing a bit outside himself. Not a boy thinking only of his feelings. And she cannot wait any longer. I love it.

Parker Trotter

I think she is just going to relocate him someplace else or let him go, the prison seems more like so that he can acclimate to his blindness without running off a cliff

Alexander

I am eager to see where she is going with this

Dan Curtis

Believe it or not, criminals have a tendency to commit crimes

Myhairhasamindofitsown

There's also a deeper question of like why does she even have a prison to begin with

Ghilz

What a b****

Ghilz

Did "he will not be there for long" REALLY JUMP OUT at anybody else?

pj wolf

Yep, pretty suree death does not await him, but Luna knows hes in for a rough ride regardless.

Thisguy

Looks like Nigel is gonna have a bad time with Leopold. Good thing he's blind though so he doesn't witness the demise that awaits him.

DiDiDi-X

In that case. Gotta trust in God's plans then πŸ™

StumpedMoose

Pretty sure it's because he's about to start tripping in that cell. Nigel thinks execution because he's paranoid and justifiably frightened.

The14th

Well, let's be fair. 2 things: Nigel did break into the sanctuary of a God to steal from them and she said he wouldn't be there long, didn't say why.

Austin Judes

I will fix it, thank you!

Zummeng

Oh good, the meathead brigade is here.

The14th

So that's how he ends up meeting meets Tristan.

Myhairhasamindofitsown

Well, ummm, WHAT!? Are we being misled or something? Luna, you heartless fiend!

StumpedMoose

Damn, Luna. 😲

AdmiredRain28

Can you replace the word "At" with "In" in the 2nd-panel, 2nd-word bubble?
