As if suffering through adversity (in Nigel’s case, believing in himself when his parents don’t believe in him) is one of his trials to becoming a guardian. In reality, his parents still care deeply for him. That’s just my take on it.

The first path could be Tobi becoming a guardian because he had a reason to be one aside carrying the family lineage. This anger Nigel as his younger brother passed the test while he didn't. The other path is Tobi failing the test like his brother, and hopefully Nigel would support him once his parents essentially abandoned them. Either way, this family is beyond broken as being a guardian basically determines their existence within the clan. You know this brings a big question. Did Nigel and Tobi had aunts and uncles that were erased from the family tree? I don't think this mentality came from the parents, but from an older generation. Maybe there were aunts, uncles, and cousins, but they failed the tests and were banished from the clan. Nigel may never knew of his unnamed relatives who shared this similar experience. I might be overthinking, but I like the idea of the family legacy ironically destroying this family from within.
