The best thing I can think of, and what probably would have helped me about 20 years ago, is you should probably find some kind of group you can attend that may have some people going through what you are, and would also have people who did let the problem get too far. Look up different support groups in your area to see if there's anything that appeals to you and what you could stick with.

Again, I apologize if it sounds rude because I feel like I’m treading a thin line by asking this.
