The Tay Bridge Disaster

In this video I show a picture of the locomotive that pulled the train which was destroyed in the collapse. It’s in pretty bad shape, not only because of the crash, but because it was accidentally dropped while being retrieved from the water.

It certainly looks like a locomotive that isn’t going to run ever again… but, in fact, it was repaired and put back into service. It ran without major incident for another 45 years before it was finally retired.

There are reports that some drivers were less than happy to find themselves working on board an engine that had been involved in such a deadly crash. Others had somewhat of a grim sense of humour about it: the engine was given the nickname “the diver”!

How about a video on Air Midwest Flight 5481? It stalled during takeoff in 2003 due to a combination of 1) a maintenance error (the turnbuckles that controlled the tension of the cables going the elevators on the tail were improperly set) and 2) overloading (the pilots calculated the weight to be within limits, but it was actually much heavier than was safe) Here's the episode of Mayday about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fQiFltkNyE And here's the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Midwest_Flight_5481

Speaking of train wrecks, I’d better get started on our taxes.
