I first heard this story back when I was in school. My science teacher told us an abridged version of it, to illustrate why it wasn't safe to eat (or even chew gum) while working in the lab.
After that, I made a point of never eating or drinking in the lab. We never worked with particularly dangerous chemicals (it was only in secondary/high school), but the story left a distinct impression on me!

2023-01-15 09:02:52 +0000 UTCI was a cautionary tale for my high school chemistry dept. while at the lab fridge I noticed a spill inside. It was clear, and I assumed it was the cold distilled water we were using that day. It was ether, and I was nearly anesthetized while cleaning it up.
