One of the best resources on the Elephant's Foot of Chernobyl is this website, which has a wealth of information and media, including a short video of the mass itself taken about ten years after the disaster.
Among other things, it goes into more detail about the various attempts made to chip off a sample of the foot for testing:
"The substance proved too hard for a drill mounted on a motorized trolley, and a soldier who volunteered to attack it with an axe left the room empty-handed - and so overexposed he had to be evacuated immediately from Chernobyl..."
The workers who cleared up after the Chernobyl Disaster were insanely brave... but even in that context volunteering to hit a mysterious, deadly mass of nuclear fuel and melted metal with an axe is another level of courage!
Fascinating Horror
