The 1979 Woolworths Fire

I have fond memories of visiting Woolworths as a child. There was no other high street store like it at the time. If you'd asked me back then I couldn't really have told you what it sold - except that it was "a little bit of everything". The huge selection of pick 'n' mix sweets was definitely the highlight, though.

If you want to either revisit memories of Woolworths, or find out more about the history of the store, I'd recommend a source I used for the video: The Woolworths Museum. As well as a very thorough history of the chain, it also has pictures from almost every decade of its existence.

It even covers the collapse of the company around 2008, which was a disaster in and of itself... and one that certainly surprised everyone. In fact, many of the staff who worked in store learned about the collapse not from Woolworths but from seeing the news on television!

Comments

I know what you mean. I remember being shown a video of a fire consuming a living room in less than two minutes. It was part of some fire safety training, and it really hit home. I just couldn't believe that furniture burned that quickly and that fiercely... but for many of the last several decades, it did!

Fascinating Horror

The history of flammable materials used for furniture could be an episode in and of itself! That store was a tinderbox.
