The Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Two things about this story stood out to me while researching, but I couldn't quite find a place for them in the video.

First, is that - like several other disasters I've covered - this one had a song written about it. Gordon Lightfoot wrote and recorded "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in 1976, just a year after the disaster. Here's a copy of it you can listen to on YouTube.

Second is a story that really struck me. According to this Wisconsin Public Radio piece, when the crew of the Arthur M Anderson learned that they were going back out into the storm to search for the Edmund Fitzgerald, one assistant cook went so far as to write and waterproof his final will. I suppose that gives some idea of how severe the storm really was!

I hadn't noticed the lack of marine life, but now that you point it out it's quite striking. Makes me think of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which went the opposite way: it became an unintentional reef after its collapse!

Fascinating Horror

Makes me wonder if we'll ever know for certain. I always think that, surely as technology improves, it'll become possible to get more and more information from shipwrecks.

Fascinating Horror

Another stunning episode. I don't know what it is but the photos from the Wreck are absolutely terrifiying- maybe because there's virtually no marine life or such.

I've been fascinated by the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald ever since I heard Gordon Lightfoot's song, so I was excited to see your video about it. Still so eerie to know that, for all the technology at our disposal, we still don't know what happened for sure...
