In this video I show a quote from a survivor of the disaster, Ruth McQuillan-Wilson. She's gone on to write a book about Summerland and the fire, which I highly recommend reading. She's also published a letter in a local paper appealing to the three boys who started the fire to come forward and speak to her.
It's strange to think that the people who started the fire are still alive today. Of course, they were never responsible for the disaster, since they couldn't have known the tiny fire they started would spread the way it did... but at the same time I would imagine that their actions have weighed heavily on them for the rest of their lives.
Amazingly, though, Ruth says that she isn't mad at them. Here's a short extract from her letter - the full text of which can be read here:
"I don’t hate you. I’ve never hated you. You couldn’t have known that small fire in a kiosk outside the building would result in such tragedy. I just want a chance to speak to you. I need to hear YOUR story. It's time."
