Isolation of Good Will

Hello everyone,

this is my entry for Jazza's "Isolation" Art Competition on YouTube, dealing with, as the title says, Isolation in combination with light as the main aspect of the art piece. The task was it to create an image about isolation and being lonely, carried by the light/lighting to bring the message across. Since we were free to use any kind of genre on this competition, I went for fantasy and tragedy in my image.

To explain my image a bit, I want to tell you what I see every day: When going to school or work, going by train, I see sad and angry people, bitterness in their eyes, no smiles on their face, barely any interaction at all or it might be a negative one at that. This is what I feel sad for as someone who always wants to carry and spread joy within her, probably even sharing it with others. And at that very second, I got the idea and imagination of a small story - that in us we carry the light on this world, we carry the light bulbs that might enlighten the darkness around us, we do have the good will in us (here in form of small fantasy creatures). However, they live from our experiences and daily behavior, causing them to change appearance and mood with every little frown we give, which is why you can see some creatures with upside down headcrests, resembling a negative smile, a sad mouth like we know it from theatre masks.

Only few people carry around a bright or strong light and a smile on their lips to make it sound extreme here, but look at our main protagonist in the centre of the painting: It has a head in the shape of a smile, a weak heart shaped light bulb still trying to carry on the light...which noone shares in return to make the darkness vanish. The Good Spirit in this weak light bulb is still there, trying to communicate, but seems to be isolated as the other creatures are too bitter, too sad or angry to listen and interact with it... Sounds familiar?

I know it might be a very extravagant, strange idea but it got stuck in my head, I had the feeling to bring it down in a painting and when I have feelings, I have to follow them. This is the result of it - a painting that surely isn't flawless and too epic to look at, yet it's strong in its message and symbolic which I hope is more understandable to you after I tried explaining it.

I might not be the most experienced adult now as I'm only 19 years old and still have a lot of things to be confronted with and to face in the future, that will also cause sorrow and worries like everyone else has at some point, but I want to spread light and make this world a better place, no matter what. isolation is the worst there is, since only together light bulbs can be strong enough to enlighten a huge dark room.

I really hope this sort of abstract and fantasy-themed painting is to your taste and brings you some joy. I really tried to make it look interesting and yet soft.

I like the simplistic naiveness the piece emits. Would be a great conversation starter piece for children or teens and/or would make a nice Dixit card. :-) Keep up the good work!
