The Hat man of Zanskar.

Affectionately known as Achoo Tong Tong or  Pischu Tong Tong , he is probably the most recognisable face from  Zanskar. All thanks to the traditional hat that he wears all year  around.
.
'Tong Tong' if you haven't guessed already refers to the wearer of the hat!
.
It is an interesting name but not as interesting as his real name - Thukje Gyatso.
.
The  word 'Thukje' means 'Compassion' in the local language. 'Gya'  means  'Deep' or 'Bottomless'. And 'Tso' means Lake or any large body of water.  So Thukje Gyatso means a Ocean of Compassion and Achoo Tong Tong  definitely lives up to his name.
.
I was with him at #Pischu when we discovered the frostbite in my feet. I had ignored it for 3  days but he immediately realised the seriousness of the situation. He  then offered to perform the traditional Zangskari treatment of burning  off the dead skin from my frostbitten toes. I refused at first but then  relented after a while as I was secretly a bit curious about the  treatment.
.
The burning had immediate effect on my toes. Blood  started flowing again and my toes were very painful the next couple of  days. It was the good kind of the pain, the pain of the body healing  itself.
.
I had initially planned to spend only a week at Pischu  but he insisted that I stay with him and not go anywhere until my feet  healed completely. So I did exactly that. Staying at the Pischu village  for over a month until I felt well enough to get moving again.

The Hat man of Zanskar. The Hat man of Zanskar. The Hat man of Zanskar. The Hat man of Zanskar.

So good to see and hear about such people. Even I had similar experience in mountains. Those people are so kind, welcoming, once we go there, they treat us like their family member. So much to learn from them. And those experiences, unconditional love from them is unforgettable.. it makes us feel that Himalaya is our home. Humanity is so much alive there.. most of the time I feel experiencing those things are real luxury in life. I am happy for you Sarvana for experiencing those things and thank you for sharing them with us in heart touching manner😍

Absolutely Sai. We can see this compassion all over the mountains, especially in the less developed parts.

Thank you Mr.Kamesh

The conditions were not really very extreme Philip. It was mostly due to carelessness. Zanskar is deceptively cold with the daytime being quite warm in the sun and the temperatures dropping rapidly the moment the sun goes down. I made the mistake of not wearing thick enough socks when I went hiking on a sunny day and paid the price in the evening. Having said that, I probably should buy specialized winter hiking boots. I have been using the same boots for summers and winters and obviously it is not the right thing to do. I now realised that the winter boots need to have enough room for you to be able wiggle your toes a bit. Otherwise the tight shoes cut off the blood circulation to the toes making it easy for them to get frostbitten.

I don't know if what Tong Tong did for your frost bite can be considered as first aid, but Ive heard of people having their toes or even the whole foot amputated as a result of unattended frostbites. Knowing this technique to restore blood circulation can be a life-saver under extreme conditions. In the past I used to think that you must be well equipped with the best cold weather clothing - head to foot, but I guess the conditions that you were under must have been very extreme.

Saravana, Incredible pictures of ""Hat man of Zanskar."" and his life.

This is truly wonderful! These acts of kindness can be barely seen in our urban communities these days. Loving how their lifestyle and simplicity makes them so much more compassionate.
