Maniwa is such an out of the box thinker that it both helps and fucks him over. So many blink and you'll miss it bits of symbolism and imagery, one neat one I really like is when they're both having drinks and Ikari goes to light a smoke, he runs out of old school matches after saying his detective's instinct "dried up long ago", he throws the empty matches next to a box of Hope cigarettes that's also empty, his hope for the case is gone and his light isn't ignited, the case is over for him. This prompts Maniwa to use a modern lighter to light his cigarette, essentially symbolising that the case itself can't be viewed through old age grounded thinking, it requires a newer, younger and fresher take on the case to understand it in the same vein that Maniwa was doing with Kozuka's interrogation. That said it also leads to Maniwa becoming separate from the reality around him and distant from the rest of the force, he's onto something perhaps but at the cost of his reliability and sanity.
