Unfortunately you can’t just quit, you’d be captured and executed for treason. It was Fathers plan and he controlled the military. Not justifying what the soldiers had to do, just adding some clarity.

2025-03-11 17:39:41 +0000 UTCMy favourite thing about the flashback of the war is that even someone like Hughes is a murderer, the same good man who loved his family and friends, who everyday went to see Ed in the hospital, who gave his home to Winry to stay in. Just goes to show that even good natured men like him are capable of being twisted in war. FMAB excels in creating a cast of characters who you root for and get behind but are in many cases extremely flawed individuals, just like any human.
