Exactly where I stand. I think I have a bias with LOTR bc I watched it for the first time with my dad, but One Piece will definitely pass it if it nails the ending.

But if Oda can nail the ending of One Piece and resolve all of the story arcs of the Straw Hats and all of the plot threads this story has then he has surpassed LOTR in my opinion.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is something that I would put up there. If you are talking about good writing and characters then there's plenty. Nana, Ping Pong the Animation, Rose of Versailles, Shiki, Gankutsuou, March comes in like a lion, etc.

2023-12-25 17:24:45 +0000 UTCI don't think anything does personally. Definitely nothing in western media. There's some masterpieces out there, but just in terms of storytelling, nah none. The closest I would say is Breaking Bad. As for anime/manga, the only shonen I think is pretty close is AoT. And a handful of seinen series as well that come close too like Kingdom, Berserk, Vinalnd, Vagabond. One Piece is definitely #1 and these 5 or 6 series I named are the only ones that come to a close 2nd.

You can like them more, that's fine it's your opinion, but objectively they're not on the same level. Especially the whole top section where you named non-anime/manga series. I am also a fan of Mahouka series (anime + Light Novels), Claymore (manga), the Index/Railgun series (anime + Light Novels), and Re:Zero series (anime + Light Novels)

Lots, One Piece gets left behind by a considerable amount (BB, BCS, Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, The Wire, Fargo tv series etc. and that's not counting film, books and video games). In anime/manga? I can think of a few stories that are at minimum on the same level if not higher. Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Oyasumi Punpun, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ashita no Joe. Just to name a few.

If you are looking for the "unexpected and clever" storytelling, its JJK now. Berserk is a great contender as a manga, but it is unfinished and will be. Truly shame. Kingdom is a great choice as well, really well written in the long term. The consistency and quality is great in OP, but I would love to see it outgrowing the tipical Shonen genre like attack on titan did. That holds it back so much, its unreal. If anyone says its Naruto/Breaking bad/Bleach/Dragon ball/Rick and morty, you know they are just STANs for that product, never seen anything else.

I'll assume they mean the managa because the anime was really good but there's several I'd still put over. Even the current Frieren I think is better than TOG. Hunterxhunter would be dope too.
