Someone just needs to politely point it out to him to not forget to zoom out on panels and to read the correct direction. Both sides aren't wrong here, just the extremes are annoying. Yes the complaining is over the top, but also don't totally dismiss them and be arrogant. They are correct in bringing this issue up.

I've also disabled the zoom feature, and we've hired a new guy to do the reactions instead of him. He looks very similar so you probably won't notice it unless you read this. If you want to catch the real Khan again, you can do so in his monthly, 15-minute car streams where he talks about the latest chapter until someone spoils or hints some stupid shit in chat. You can clearly see where its split, by the bigger white part in the middle between the two Vegapunks. The bubbles have different shapes to be able to understand who says what etc. Even the narrator box is usually different to understand whats up. It could not be easier to read it from right to left top to bottom, in such a fully bloated page. But opinions differ. Which is a good thing.

It may not be perfect, but it's not difficult to understand the logic, especially since if you look at the logic of a manga, you see York above, there's a separation of space in white indicating that you need to go down, then York appears above Shaka and just below her previews dialogue. It's pretty obvious that you need to finish this part on the lright first, then read the squares above and then Shaka appears. Again, it may not be perfect, but in my opinion, the page looks very nice and it's not difficult to read. If you're reading with zoom, it may cause problems.

2023-03-08 20:44:47 +0000 UTCWhen I say he misinterprets I mean in the sense that he very literally reads the words on the page and gets something else entirely out of them. I think it's fine if he doesn't fully understand something (yet) or if he thinks xy or z will happen and it doesn't; that's all to be expected. However, he has a tendency to take things way too literally and unless he's told after the fact, he's going to stay with those assumptions. For instance, in this chapter when Shaka says "this place is the past" Khan thinks he means in a very literal sense when Shaka really means that this place is similar to the past due to the highly advanced tech. Same thing with yesterday's chapter too. Khan thought Shaka could very literally see his death in the future, but the interpretation was never intended to be that literal, Shaka (vegapunk) is just smart enough to know his life is in danger.

I'm all up for discussion but the One Piece community is akin to FF14, they love you for praising it and jumping for joy when something hype happens, but the second you speak critical of it they lose their mind. There are plenty of mangas out there that structure single and double page spreads better than One Piece. Sometimes Oda decides to use the real estate to either infodump or spam as much into it as he can rather than utilise it to effectively portray something. The examples of this chapter being that as soon as you turn the page to find Shaka and York, you're greeted with a spread that requires you to read the page again or re-read a panel in order to make sure you're good to move on, York and Shaka having no boundary between their panels despite being sep pages. A chapter shouldn't constantly make you think you missed something. Anyway thanks for the passive aggressive response, I'm sure you're a frequenter of the One Piece reddits and forums

It's apparent in his dialogue sometimes too where he has his character explicitly say things rather than rely on implicit dialogue which a lot of authors do. Which does make sense a balance is needed to not insult your viewers intelligence. I doubt he'll have many misunderstandings after a few rereads and discussions

I don't wanna dictate how he reads and understands the story, but it felt like he didn't quite grasp the reveal at the end there. They explain it more in detail next chapter so it's fine, but man the biggest shock for me reading the end there was how a nation was so advanced in prehistoric times. HOW were they so advanced. There's a hint in this chapter regarding their power source being an undying flame, but yea khan was more focused on how/why they fell rather than how they were even able to pull off something like that 900 years ago. It was funny seeing him assume egghead and the ancient kingdom having some sort of relationship back then when the connection was that the tech we have today, isn't new at all. It's a play on the entire shtick of this island being 500 years into the future. Not that they both were advanced areas 900 years ago, but only one fell. All will be explained regardless though

There is no mystery, it's super easy to read (if you are a manga reader), and the page looks very beautiful. The panels have borders and white space separating them, so I can't understand the difficulty, maybe you are zooming in like Khan, but even then you just have to follow the logic of a manga.

Oda just can't structure his pages well and especially so when it comes to infodumps or reveals, it's messy and amateurish in display at times but no one will criticise it because "GODA" is infallible to those rooted in the fandom, most of which I see sprawling in these comments sections unfortunately.

That double page spread with Shaka and York reveals was diabolical and embarrassing from someone who's been drawing manga for over 20 years. It doesn't flow, it doesn't have readability, it's just lines and scenes all splattered on a page to the point it looks like an overweight dude in jeans and a shirt 4 sizes too small for him, none of it really fits and gels together that it's not enjoyable or easy to read. If someone misses something or misconstrues the order or understanding of events, I don't think it's their fault.
