You're one of the people that believes that a story needs to get darker as it progresses, or it's characters need to become someone else entirely in order to fulfil "Character development and Growth". Going back again to the fundamentals of who Luffy is as a character and his journey up to this point, a young man of unwavering conviction and belief, you've obviously forgotten the growth and development he's obtained and the manifestation of that in something that speaks perfectly to who Luffy is as a character, at his very base level. He's been ripped apart and broken down, only to stand back up and realise the importance of remembering what you have, who you are. This is a shonen son, it is not a seinen, it doesn't need to teach children that in order to overcome turmoil you must become a serious badass or be drowned in morbid "realism", in fact it's teaching kids the ability to overcome by not letting go of your ideals, who you are, who you represent at your core. Luffy is the manifestation of what kids going to adulthood should be. Free, unashamed, this is what they should aspire to be in a world where becoming an adult "means" letting go of your dreams and sense of adventure because some power above you told you to do so, fighting against that ideology. If Luffy went all mature badass mode, it would be the complete opposite of who he is, what he is, what he represents and what Oda is trying to convey to the younger generation. Gear 5 is who Luffy as a person is, this is his "final state".

OP got so many serious metaphors bout serious world issues we currently face in the real world, the politics, the portrayal of multilevel social classes and their clash against hope and despair. These all the things most people appreciate the most about OP. Now…my dilemma is .. growth &development… like you said.. we were goofy in the start.. that kept decreasing as we moved forward with the story.. now it came back full blown scale. Its not the right time. The final saga should be the world gov sage, the corruption, censorship, oppression, and more.. all serious stuff requires serious protagonist. You gotta teach the kids its okay to be goofy 99% of the times but you still gotta teach them to be serious when it matters and i loved ALL the goofy luffy till this one fight. Its just not the right time and place.

Or have you just chosen to passively ignore how wacky and silly the series has been? Luffy's entire personality is a quirky, zany youth who is empowered by a sense of freedom, he's someone who isn't badass or morose or edgy, he's filled with life. Gear 5 is a representation of that fact, a representation of someone who is a free spirit and has the desire to express that to the world at large. It's one of the most refreshing transformations in anime/manga due to it going against the oversaturated status quo of having the character turn into a badass god who spouts edgy one-liners like a Sasuke fanboy with Tourettes. I've noticed a lot of people have hopped on the One Piece train in recent years due to Whole Cake or Wano hype and just forget or ignore the early series so they can get to the juicy bits, but man alive do they miss the crucial foundation and theme of One Piece which was at it's peak during the early days. This is a story about dreams, hope and adventure, not a DBZ fest like the anime in the last year has made everyone believe it is.
