Obviously Oda isn't going to show Luffy busting it out against Hody or CC of all people or show the readers everything he has right out of the gate, but as readers we all knew there was the potential for Luffy to have stuff he hasn't shown yet because he didn't truly have a challenge until Doffy. Paralleling Law and Kid to Luffy when their situations are polar opposites is idiotic.

Law showing awakening after being with us on our journey for 500 chapters is akin to Luffy showing it in the same manner. All Oda needed to do was show 1 panel of Law or Kid saying "I have something up my sleeve" or ANYTHING to show that they had this, we don't need to see training, they're not the main characters. Kid having awakening is more understandable because he's more mysterious, we haven't followed his journey in the new world. For all we know, he could have achieved awakening in the 2 year TS, but Law has been right there with us all along. How convenient for him to learn such a pivotal powerup in the 1 arc he isn't on screen (WCI). Again, I would've been way more okay with it if Oda dedicated anything to show that they had something this big they were sitting on. It feels like Oda was like oh shit I actually want to take a yonkou down right here and now but how do I do it? It does not feel well planned at all.

2023-01-30 15:25:07 +0000 UTCI'm gonna disagree with some of your points here, there's common trope in storytelling and you've likely heard it before and it goes like this "Show, don't tell", Oda ignores this a lot and instead he reveals it when it's convenient to do so and then shows 3 flashback panels AFTER the ability has been revealed. Now this is fine and all only when you don't reveal how different the scale is between certain characters abilities and the main characters abilities. To the characters, it doesn't make sense to just go "Hey guys I learned a new power last week, lemme tell you about it" but to the audience it makes complete sense to understand that "something" has changed. One Piece does this rarely and at this stage it's just a shrug and move on kind of deal, but I do think it's still worthy of criticism. I'm sure you could go back and find little titbits that reference to the fact they learned something, but titbits that don't hold any weight and are throwaways in passing are poor attempts at trying to point and go "There I did it!". Naruto does do it better to some extent because the natural flow of character progression to the audience makes sense, the surprise comes from what comes with it. For instance when Naruto gains Kyuubi cloak after training, he becomes faster than Raikage a man known for his speed, or when he beats Neji after learning to control his chakra better, two characters who at the time were better than Naruto at it. It works within the realms of a consistent story, then goes loopy with Sage of Six Paths towards the end, a power up with no build up or audience awareness and is just thrust upon the viewer for surprise. It didn't work and I think was thrown in because Kishimoto completely mishandled the power creep of Madara. One Piece can somewhat get away with it cause it always does this, however I do think people should still criticise it as a flaw within the flow of the development of character strength. It doesn't have to be crazy, it doesn't have to be chapters of Luffy having bamboo smacked on his head by a wise sensei figure, it just needs to be enough to connect a dot effectively from an audience perspective. Oda is great at world building, great at side character development, but he's not this absolute messiah of storytelling, he stumbles in places. It's just when you've put so many years of investment into a story and world as a reader you choose to ignore these things or let them go so you can continue to enjoy it.

You know, the one drawn and written by the actual original creator of the series? How is it spoiling himself if he's reading the flow of the plot in the way the creator intended? Kinemon done eveerything he needed to if Wano liberated his death would be iconic and his memory and legacy would live on, but he came back to life with bs hax and an excuse with some unfunny fart joke entrance BRO ODA NOBODY LAUGHED G. Furthermore it taints Kaidos image of being a ruthless demon killing people off when he doesnt kill anyone at all. Someone please tell Oda to stop ruining his masterpiece.

He didn't know it was a flashback when Kidd asked Law about his powers, In the stream he did, he noticed it's a flashback and was fine with it . And also true, we follow Luffy and gear 2 was a complete surprise. We haven't seen Law since Dressrosa and haven't seen Kidd since Kaido beat him up. It makes sense and they have awakening and we didn't know about it. You can't get awakening through just training

Honestly, I prefer this method to Naruto, where the whole arc is going on and Naruto is just off on some training arc by himself, not participating in the actual events of the story. Or Ichigo getting a random 1000 year training buff. There was no foreshadowing for Gear 4th, and often times in One Piece, guys just did things. Awakenings have been a thing forever. We don't need Kid and Law to be meditating in a room, fight a ghost version of themselves trying to reach awakening.

There's a difference between a surprise (that makes sense) and an assppull. 0 foreshadowing for their awakenings before the MC and when BM and Kaido don't even have it themselves (a flaw imo). No training, buildup, mention of it before, not even showing prior to this scene that they're aware of what awakening is. It was forced into the story so that BM could be taken out for plot reasons (her downfall is still extremely forced).
