Chapter  23 - Say “Big Brother”! Please!

We were almost back at the Napping Cat Inn, when I noticed a small crowd gathered around the entrance. Misha and Sil too were watching the crowd, from a small distance.

As soon as he noticed me, Sil ran in my direction, wagging his tail.

Seeing him, however, prompted Zizi and Pipi to hide behind my back.

I picked up the wolf cub and started filling my fluff meter. I had seen various Beastkin kids at the orphanage, so my desire for fluffiness was at an all time high.

Some time after Sil, Misha approached us too.

“Tenma, who are those two?”

I replied, while continuing to fluff Sil.

“They’re Zizi and Pipi sisters. I just hired them. The older one, Zizi, is going to do the same training as you.”

“Got it. I’m Misha, nice to meet you!”

Misha frankly greeted the two little girls.

Zizi hurriedly did the same.

“M-My name is Zizi, I’m thirteen years old. Nice to meet you…eh? T-Training…!?”

I hadn’t said anything about the training yet to Zizi, so she was naturally surprised.

“My name is Pipi, I’m seven years old. Nice to meechou…”

Pipi, embarrassed for fumbling her words at the very end, became as red as an apple.

One of her ears was perked right up, but the other was folded halfway. That was pretty cute too.

Misha seemed to be fond of Pipi already, and gently caressed her head.

I stopped fluffing Sil and introduced him to the sisters.

“This boy is my familiar, Sil. We’re all going to live together from now on, so I hope you’ll get along. Sil, you get along with them too, all right?”

“Woof!” (“Okay!”)

After Sil replied, I put him closer to the sisters, slowly, so they wouldn’t be scared. They seemed a little wary at first, but tried petting him — and soon enough, became captivated by his fluffiness.

While Pipi was petting Sil, Misha was petting her bunny ears.

No fair! I want to do it too!!

Anyhow, introductions were done, so I asked Misha about something that was on my mind.

“By the way, what’s going on at the inn?”

“I don’t know…I came to eat, and it was already like this.”

Right then, Marissa came out and started yelling at the crowd.

“How many times do I have to say it!? We’re not going to serve jerky at lunch, and at dinner it will be served to our guests first anyway!! The stock is limited, and for today it’s all sold out already! If you still want to complain, I’m not going to give you a single piece of jerky anymore! Get it through your skulls!!”

The people gathered around the entrance then left, grunting and muttering. Once the crowd cleared, Marissa noticed us and came closer, smiling.

“I told some of our regulars that we had some new jerky, and the rumors apparently spread, with the results you just saw. If I didn’t limit the quantity, as you said, it might have been a disaster.”

Marissa sounded pretty tired.

I could tell her the recipe, but without the same equipment they might not be able to reproduce the same taste…Forest Wolf meat wasn’t sold on the market, anyway.

Well, that was an issue that could wait for another time. I had more pressing things to take care of first.

“I would like to reserve one more room for tonight, is it possible?”

Marissa, however, replied apologetically.

“Oh, I’m sorry, dear…I said that the jerky was going to be served to our guests first, and people even changed inns to come eat it, so we’re all full. There’s a line, even.”

Hmm, what to do…

Thanks to ALA, finding a room for the sisters to sleep in wasn’t a problem. But I wanted to explain to them about my Room and the rest after binding the secrecy contract.

I thought about it for a while, then sent a Mental Message to Dorothea.

(W-W-What!? What’s going on!?)

It was the first time I talked with her telepathically, so she was completely taken by surprise. I explained our circumstances and asked if Zizi and Pipi could stay at her home tonight. Dorothea agreed enthusiastically.

We were going to eat lunch, form the Contract magic agreement at the Magicians’ Guild, then take Zizi and Pipi to Dorothea’s home…at least, that was the plan.

Dorothea, however, invited me to stay over too. I told her about Misha and Sil, but she said that there was plenty of room for everyone.

She had been very helpful to us all day, so I guessed I could spare some time to talk with her about magic…

I told Marissa that we were going to stay at Dorothea’s mansion, then left.

~

We thus headed towards the Magicians’ Guild, stopping by a street stall for a quick lunch.

Once we arrived in front of the building of the Merchants’ Guild (which housed the Magicians’ Guild as well) we found one of the women that accompanied Dorothea during our first meeting waiting for us.

“Sir Tenma, thank you for your time and patience the other day. Please allow me to introduce myself properly: my name is Calliana, I am the submaster of the Alchemists’ Guild.”

Indeed, so many things happened that day that she didn’t even have the chance to introduce herself. Zanvert told me that she was in her late forties: according to Appraisal, she was precisely 49 years old.

From her slim physique, however, one would assume she was in her twenties. She had the appearance of a skilled secretary, with blue hair neatly tied behind her head. Her title also revealed she was the fourth daughter of a viscount house, which made sense. Being with Dorothea, however, probably made her show her true self a bit, hence she seemed a bit of a ditz sometimes.

Calliana continued, in a clear and firm tone.

“Lady Dorothea has returned to her home, to be ready to welcome you tonight. The preparations for your Contract magic pact are already completed.”

Calliana then led us to the same room we used for the Contract magic spell the other day.

Inside, Marcel was waiting for us.

Zizi said that she trusted me about the conditions of her employment, so there was no need to form a Contract about that. We thus only made one related to confidential information I didn’t want spread around. Since we were there, I made a similar Contract with Misha too.

Once the contracts were done, Calliana took us to Dorothea’s home.

On the way there, I was feeling pretty anxious: what kind of place was it going to be?

A magic-obsessed freak like Dorothea was definitely bad at doing chores: she had gone back first for a reason, I just knew it.

Well, if it’s horrible we can just run away!

The confidentiality contracts are done, so we can go to ALA anytime, anyway.
