Chapter  21 - Zizi and Pipi

After parting ways with Zanvert and Barrol, I proceeded down the main avenue. Eventually, I arrived close to the Merchants’ Guild…wary of the risk of bumping into Dorothea and her latching onto me, I turned back immediately.

The Caron Trading Company was in front of me then: I saw Raana, behind the counter, talking with a customer. I mingled among the passersby and walked past the entrance.

…being in Ronda was a pain, after all.

After spending so much time on my own, interacting with people was mentally draining for me. Feeling that was pretty pathetic of me, I kept on walking, and eventually arrived in front of the church.

…right, I still hadn’t visited it!

The first time I saw it, I was more interested in what the market had to offer and completely forgot about it.

I walked towards the entrance of the church and noticed a small crowd of people gathered in the lot next to it.

I took a peek: the crowd was composed of several women clad in light blue robes and thirty or so children.

Was it this world’s version of a school?

Upon closer inspection…there were lots of Beastkin among them!

The variety of tails was especially fascinating! Wonderful!

Some were quite long and fluffy, while others poked just a little bit out of the owner’s behind…the variety of movements and colors was very rich as well, even within the same species.

I wanted to fluff them so bad…!!

These sweet delusions of mine, however, were abruptly interrupted by an unpleasant noise.

The sound came from a corner of the lot. In the shadow of a large tree, where the robed ladies could not see, a Humankin child, maybe twelve or thirteen years old, was surrounded by three boys her same age.

I took a better look, and noticed that she was standing between the boys and another little girl, this one with bunny ears.

“You need to start working already! Get out of our orphanage!”

One of the boys was addressing the girls with a rather harsh tone.

The Humankin girl glared at him in response.

…so this was an orphanage, not a school.

The girl continued glaring, without saying a word, so another one of the boys spoke up.

“There are no jobs for us, the only thing we can do is become adventurers, even if it’s dangerous. But you are being invited by the Elbis Trading Company, aren’t you!? Hah, I have no idea why they want someone slow and dumb like you are, anyway! We’re definitely stronger and smarter!!”

The girl finally opened her mouth to retort.

“Have you forgotten what Coln said? Tanya was invited to work at the Elbis company and was sent to Corbal, and when she arrived there they forced her to work in a brothel!! The Elbis company said she was going to work in a tavern, though!! They’re lying so they can sell  orphanage girls to brothels!!”

Despite her heartfelt protest, the boy who accused her first just grinned.

“What’s the matter? Unless you can find another job in two weeks, you’ll have to go to the Elbis company anyway!! Once you get out, there’ll be more food for us too. The only thing good about you is your huge rack, so you’re better off in a brothel anyway! Once I become an adventurer and start earning money, I’ll come see you, all right?”

Honestly, this kid! How could he be so crass at his age?

Kids could be a lot more cruel than adults, after all, and say terrible things without thinking much.

Was the girl really useless, as he said?

I tried using Appraisal…wow! She was a natural born alchemist!

The girl’s natural talent for the Alchemy skill was [S]!

It was only the second time I had witnessed natural talent of this caliber, after being reborn in this world. The first time was Dorothea, who had [S] talent in magic power, INT and magic-related skills. Considering her position, I thought it was pretty understandable, but this girl seemed to be heading to a brothel…

She also had an [A] talent in Cooking. She didn’t seem to have learned any skills yet, and her other talents were very unbalanced, but she could be an excellent specialist. She was also just level 5, which was fantastic!

If she was going to undertake Tenma-style training, the lower the level, the better.

I wanted that girl…I had to have her!

“Ehm, do you have any business with our orphanage?”

One of the robed women approached me from behind. I was completely focused on the little girl, so I jumped up in surprise. Thinking about it, I must have looked pretty suspicious, spying on the children like that…

I couldn’t let the girl go, though!!

“I-I’m sorry, ma’am. I wanted to know what to do in order to employ one of the children from your orphanage.”

I asked the question as politely as I could, trying hard to hide the excitement in my voice.

The woman looked at me with suspicion and inquired about my background.

“...are you here on someone’s orders?”

“No, I would be employing the child in question for myself. Would that be difficult?”

“You should speak to the director, then. Have you already decided who you wish to employ?”

I immediately pointed to the little girl.

“That young lady.”

Realizing what my finger was pointing at, the boys scampered away.

Only the girl and the smaller child behind her were left, listening intently to my conversation with the woman.

The woman seemed wary at first, probably because the girl I expressed interest for was considered lacking in skill, but after telling me to talk with the director, she couldn’t back down anymore.
