Chapter 17 (Final Chapter) – Return
I sat in a chair in my room, thinking about how to create the magic that would locate Earth.
Using space-time magic was a given.
But the real key was how I would actually find it.
“A spell that locates the place I want to go…?”
That might just work.
But how would I make it?
There’s no such thing as a map or a navigator for traveling between worlds.
…Wait, a map?
Then it hit me—almost every map has one essential element.
“A compass.”
Every map includes one, to help you tell which direction is north. They're used in sailing and exploration to keep you on course—or help you find your way when you’re lost.
“Finding your way when you’re lost… That’s exactly what this is!”
I was lost—because I didn’t know where Earth was.
In that case, maybe a spell to locate Earth should work the same way.
Though… maybe it’s less of a spell and more like a magic tool?
Now I was starting to question why I had been trying to make it as a spell to begin with.
No… might as well think through both approaches.
~
Several days passed, and I was still at it.
I had a clear goal and direction, but I just couldn’t seem to give it form.
“What does a compass even look like again? The ones used on ships are called nautical compasses… or just compasses, right?”
If I scaled one up big enough, maybe it could work even across different worlds?
I started shaping the spell in my mind.
By entering a deep meditative state, I solidified the concept.
And with that, the spell was born—Coordinate Search.
I immediately activated it by chanting the name.
“――Coordinate Search.”
The star I wanted to find was Earth—our home.
A few seconds passed after activation… but still nothing.
Minutes dragged by, and just as I approached the ten-minute mark—
“――Got it!”
I couldn’t help but shout.
That’s how happy I was.
I had finally found our home.
“Ellis, the spell worked. I’ve successfully developed it.”
《Congratulations. I have confirmed that the location it identified matches the Earth as you perceive it, Master.》
So it wasn’t a mistake after all.
Even though it had been active for quite a while, the spell hadn’t drained much mana.
I still didn’t know how much mana would be required for inter-world travel, so having this one be low-cost was a huge plus.
“How’s your side coming along, Ellis?”
《Currently at 50% completion. It will be finished in three days.》
So it’d take a little more time, huh?
“By the way, how exactly are we going to move between worlds?”
《If we used teleportation, there’s a risk of being stranded in space-time if the transfer fails.》
Whoa, what? That’s terrifying.
Wait, wouldn’t that mean everyone except me could die if something went wrong?
《Affirmative. That is why I chose an alternative approach: shortening the space-time distance between worlds and bringing the coordinates closer.》
So basically… it’s like drawing two points on a piece of paper, then folding the paper so the points overlap?
《That is an accurate interpretation.》
“How do we travel then? Do we vanish like with teleportation?”
《It will be more like a gate—similar to the lower-tier Transfer Gate spell.》
“Hmm… In that case, let’s just call the spell World Gate, the gate that links worlds.”
《Understood. From this moment on, the spell will be designated as World Gate.》
“Alright. Let me know once it’s done.”
《Acknowledged.》
After ending the conversation with Ellis, I glanced out the window.
The sun was high in the sky… and my stomach growled.
“Guess it’s time for lunch.”
I left my room and headed downstairs.
Everyone was in the middle of preparing lunch, and they noticed as soon as I entered.
“Welcome back, Haruto-san. Are you finished for now?”
Finne spoke up, and the others all turned to look at me.
So I gave them a smile.
“Yeah. I’ve successfully developed the spell to locate our home.”
With that, the room erupted in cheers.
I turned to Suzuno and called her name.
“Suzuno. I found it. I found Earth—our home.”
“R-Really…?”
Tears welled up in Suzuno’s eyes as she stared in shock… then she ran straight into my arms and started crying.
“I… I was scared we’d never make it back…”
“Everyone wants to go home. There’s no way I’d give up on that.”
“Thank you…”
I gently stroked her head.
“We haven’t finished the return spell yet, but we will make it back. All of us—together.”
“Yeah…!”
Finne and the others were just as overjoyed that I had succeeded in developing the spell to locate our home.
~
And so, three days passed.
I had already told Finne and the others during lunch that the spell would be ready in three days, and since they all wanted to come with me, I had them start preparing. Even though she’s not officially one of my fiancées, Asha said she’d be coming along too.
There were still a lot of uncertainties—like what would happen to people like Ephyr, who aren't native to Earth, or whether magic would still work over there. But when they told me they wanted to come anyway, I was honestly happy.
As for Tendo and the others, I decided to keep things vague and didn’t tell them exactly when the spell would be complete—I just told them to start preparing. Not that it mattered—they totally figured it out and were already celebrating, so… yeah, not much of a surprise.
Somehow, Fran caught wind of the situation too and showed up at the mansion, fully packed and ready to go. She looked way too excited about visiting my home world, though honestly, Finne and the others weren’t hiding their excitement either.
Not that I could talk—I was looking forward to it just as much.
After those three days, once dinner was done and I was relaxing in my room—
《Master, development of the spell World Gate has been successfully completed.》
“For real!?”
《Yes. As for the mana consumption you were concerned about—it will consume approximately one-third of your total mana capacity.》
That’s quite a chunk… but considering this is a spell that lets us travel between worlds, I’d say that’s a bargain.
I walked over and opened my window, gazing up at the night sky filled with stars.
It had been a long time since I took the time to really look up like this.
“…We can finally go home.”
My quiet words drifted away into the sky.
~
The next morning, we had a quick breakfast and headed straight to the royal castle.
Tendo and the others were already gathered, along with Dillan and the rest of the royals. I’d sent word for everyone to gather early this morning.
“Rejoice—because we can finally go home!”
As I declared it, the room exploded in cheers.
Naturally, the ones cheering the loudest were the heroes—Tendo and the rest of our classmates.
“H-Haruto… is it really true!?”
Mogami rushed up to me.
“Yeah. So let’s go—let’s return to Earth, to our home.”
“But, Haruto-kun… will we be able to come back to this world afterward?”
Usami-sensei asked me with a concerned expression—the teacher who had always cared about me more than anyone else.
I gave her the biggest smile I could.
“Of course. I created the magic so we can come and go. It uses a lot of mana, but… as long as I’m around, there’s no problem. So let’s go home, with peace of mind.”
Then I turned to Dillan.
“Thank you… for everything up until now.”
“Think nothing of it. By the time Iris comes back, I imagine her little brother or sister will be born.”
“Wait… what?”
Everyone—including Iris—turned to look at Queen Amalia.
She blushed and gently rubbed her lower abdomen.
“Well… I’m expecting.”
There was a brief stunned silence—then an outpouring of congratulations.
“So Iris is going to be a big sister, huh?”
“Fufun~♪”
Iris puffed out her chest (which didn’t exactly have much to puff) as everyone gave her warm, affectionate looks.
“W-What is it!?”
“Oh, nothing. It’s just… you’re kind of adorable when you do that.”
Finne and the others all nodded in agreement.
“――Alright, everyone got their bags?”
Everyone making the journey to Earth—the heroes, our teacher, and my fiancées—all nodded in response.
“Okay! Time to activate it!”
I closed my eyes, then slowly opened them.
I already had Earth’s coordinates locked in.
All that was left was to activate World Gate.
“―― ‘World Gate’!”
The moment I spoke the spell, a radiant, majestic gate appeared before us.
“…Huh?”
When I pictured it, I imagined something just big enough for a person to walk through… but this thing’s huge.
《This was a surprise from me. Did you enjoy it?》
Yeah, I was seriously shocked.
《Once I had the coordinates, I actually had the core components of the spell completed already. But I figured Master would need some time to prepare, so I spent it optimizing the mana consumption and adjusting the size of the gate. I wanted to make sure your return home would be as comfortable as possible.》
Heh… That really caught me off guard. But—thanks, Ellis.
I gave my thanks to Ellis, my ever-reliable partner.
Everyone was staring at the massive gate, speechless.
“What are you all so stunned for? It won’t stay open forever, you know.”
My words seemed to snap them back to reality.
The first ones to step through the gate were Mitsurugi Kento, Suruga Hayato, and Matsuba Ryo—the three who used to bully me, but had long since mellowed out. They passed through in silence.
After them, Usami-sensei, Tendo, and the rest of our classmates followed, vanishing one by one through the glowing portal.
Now it was just us left.
I started thinking about how we’d be treated once we were back on Earth… and found myself gripped by anxiety.
That’s when Finne reached out and gently held my hand.
When I looked over, she was smiling softly.
“I’m looking forward to seeing your home, Haruto-san.”
“Me too!”
“As am I.”
“We’ll all be there together, so don’t worry!”
“I can’t wait.”
“It’s kind of exciting, actually.”
“Yes… I’m looking forward to seeing what your world is like.”
“The God-Slaying Hero has nothing to fear. Hold your head high—we’re going home. I’m excited too.”
“As your maid, I’ll do my very best!”
Finne, Iris, Ephyr, Suzuno, Kuzel, Ilmina, Charlotte, Fran, and Asha—each of them looked at me and said it.
So I was the only one who was nervous, huh…
Then Finne said:
“Make sure you introduce us to your parents, okay?”
“Yeah. I will. I’ll introduce all of you—my fiancées, the people I love and treasure most.”
After a deep breath, I stepped forward.
“All right—let’s go home.”
And just like that, we too stepped through the gate.
~
On the other side of the gate, we found ourselves at the top of a mountain just a bit away from our school.
Finne and the others were right beside me, seemingly unaffected by the transfer. They looked the same as always—healthy and happy. That was a relief. Well, I would need to do something about Ephyr and Fran’s ears…
Just like Ellis had said, I could still use all my abilities. And apparently, so could the others.
Which meant… we’d returned to Earth as the strongest people alive.
We’d need to learn how to properly handle our powers here.
Nearby, Usami-sensei and all of our classmates were wiping tears from their eyes, overwhelmed with joy.
“We… finally made it back.”
I murmured those words, full of emotion, just as the World Gate I’d created closed behind us.
Looking out from the mountaintop, we could see the stars glittering in the sky and the brilliant lights of the city—a beautiful nightscape we hadn’t seen in so long.
The sight hit me right in the heart.
We then changed into the uniforms we were wearing when we were first summoned. Well, I’d sold mine a while ago, so I had a new one made.
I also gave Finne and the others outfits I’d prepared in advance that wouldn’t stand out too much in this world.
“All right, let’s head home.”
With that, everyone broke into a sprint, racing down the mountain road.
Given our current physical abilities, it was probably going to cause quite the stir… but I’d deal with that later.
With Finne and the others by my side, I began walking at a slower, more peaceful pace.
Finally, I arrived at my house, stood in front of the door, and gently pushed it open.
“—I’m home!”
And so, the heroes who were once summoned to another world finally returned home—to Earth, their birthplace. Safely, and together.
(TWEM Vol. 8 END)
---
Yes, this is the official final chapter of TWEM, there’s no continuation in the web novel either. It’s officially the end. We’re now looking for a new series to replace it, and I’ll be putting up a poll soon to help decide.
