Chapter 16 – A Clue to Returning Home
The day after the signing ceremony—and the surprise engagement party that followed—I headed to see Tendo and the others, who were staying in a room provided by the castle. I brought Suzuno with me. I had already told Tendo the day before that there was something important I needed to talk about.
When I knocked on Tendo’s door, Shinonome was the one who answered.
“You're here. Suzuno too—Koji, the two of them have arrived.”
After Shinonome called out Tendo’s name, he appeared shortly after.
“Hey, Haruto, Suzuno. Looks like everyone else is ready too.”
“Thanks. Then let’s move to the grand hall. I already had Dillan set up a space for us yesterday.”
“Got it. Mind heading there first and waiting for us?”
With that, Suzuno and I headed to the grand hall ahead of the others. She spoke up seriously.
“Haruto-kun.”
“What is it?”
“I hope you find a way to go home.”
“Yeah. It might take time, but I’ll find one for sure.”
“I believe you can do it, Haruto-kun.”
After arriving at the grand hall, where the chairs had already been arranged, the others began to trickle in. Tendo, Shinonome, Asakura, and Mogami led the group.
“Haven’t seen you since yesterday. For now, have a seat.”
Once I confirmed everyone had sat down, I looked around and spoke.
“The reason I called everyone here today is because I have something to talk about—regarding our return to Earth.”
That announcement caused a stir.
Of course it did. Everyone wanted to return to their homes, to the families waiting for them.
“Can we… really go back?” Mogami asked.
I answered him honestly.
“I don’t know yet. I’m currently using one of my skills to analyze the magic circle used in the Hero Summoning. The analysis should finish sometime today.”
Everyone’s faces lit up.
But then I shook my head.
“Sorry. Just because it’ll be analyzed doesn’t mean we’ll be able to go back right away.”
Their hopeful expressions instantly dimmed.
“Well… once the analysis is complete, we’ll at least know how to travel between worlds. After that, it’ll just be a matter of locating Earth and creating a spell to get us there. So don’t get too discouraged. Honestly, you could even start getting your hopes up.”
Their expressions began to brighten again.
“So, Yuuki-kun,” Asakura asked, “does that mean if we return to Earth, we won’t be able to come back to this world?”
Several classmates nodded along with the question. Apparently, some of them had found lovers here. If that’s the case, it’s no surprise that a few would hesitate to leave.
“No. I’ll make sure we can travel freely between both worlds. I’ve got family—people who are just as important—here too.”
And then I added,
“Besides, in the end… I’ve grown to love this world too.”
That made everyone smile.
“As expected of our hero!”
“Yeah! Our hero—no, our god-slaying hero!”
“You can totally do it, Haruto-kun!”
“Marry me too!”
I heard voices cheering me on, but one of those clearly didn’t belong in the mix. Yeah, I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that… for the sake of my own sanity.
Suzuno, on the other hand, immediately reacted. “Who just said that?! I’m not giving up my Haruto-kun!”
Please stop. You’re embarrassing me.
After that, everyone started sharing what they wanted to do once they got back to Earth, what they wanted to eat, and the room filled with excitement.
Then Tendo asked me a question.
“Haruto… what do you think will happen when we return to Earth?”
He probably meant whether it would cause trouble or not.
I had considered that too.
We’ve spent quite a bit of time in this world already but no one knows if time has continued to move forward on Earth or if it’s been frozen. If it has continued as normal, we’ll be seen as a group of high schoolers who disappeared and then suddenly reappeared… well, plus one teacher.
Everyone’s eyes were on me.
“If you’re asking whether it’ll become a problem… yeah, probably. It’s been a long time, after all.”
And there’s one more issue.
“That power of ours… what if we’re used for military purposes or something…?” Shinonome asked, making the atmosphere suddenly tense.
She had a point. That was the biggest concern.
Whether our magic and skills would even work back on Earth was completely unknown. But if they did work, there was no doubt they’d cause all kinds of trouble.
“Hang on a sec.”
I decided to ask Ellis for her insight on the matter.
《It’s unclear whether everyone’s powers will remain after returning to Earth… but I, and all of Master’s powers, will definitely stay intact. Therefore, memory manipulation is also possible.》
As expected of my partner.
Still… aren’t my skills just a little too OP?
Feels like I’ve already surpassed the realm of gods at this point.
《Master has already stepped into the domain of the divine. Chronos was a formidable enemy, one of the higher-ranked gods. It’s safe to assume that most gods wouldn’t stand a chance against Master.》
…I’m OP.
Like, seriously.
Anyway.
“Uh, so apparently my abilities will remain when I go back, and I can use them to mess with memories and stuff.”
Everyone went slack-jawed.
A few seconds later…
“Ehhhhh?!”
A collective scream of disbelief echoed through the grand hall.
“You’re joking, right? You can’t seriously rewrite the memories of everyone on Earth… right…?”
Asakura asked timidly.
《It is possible.》
“…Y-yeah, looks like I can.”
The hall fell completely silent.
Then, in perfect unison:
“““That’s totally broken…!”””
How rude.
There are things I can’t do, I’ll have you know.
…Right?
Wait. Why am I not sure about that?
The fact that I can’t say it with confidence might be the scariest part.
And just as I was thinking that—
《The analysis of the Hero Summoning Magic Circle has been completed.》
No way!? That timing’s way too perfect…
I stood up and looked around the room, making the announcement.
“Rejoice—just now, the analysis of the Hero Summoning Magic Circle has been completed!”
Tendo turned to me and asked,
“Ha-Haruto. Are you serious…?”
“Have I ever lied to you?”
"""Plenty of times."""
Tendo, Mogami, Asakura, and Shinonome all gave me a deadpan look.
Yeah… okay. Fair. That has happened a lot.
“Haruto-kun, so? Which is it? You’re not messing with us this time, right?”
I nodded at Suzuno’s question.
“It’s true. We’re one step closer to getting home!”
A beat later, the grand hall erupted with cheers.
At this point, we were so close.
—or so I thought.
《Based on the analysis, it appears this magic was designed to summon only those who had potential as Heroes. Since the ones being summoned didn’t originally have any power, the gods likely intervened and granted them strength.》
Ellis continued.
《However, now that we understand how to summon someone across worlds, it is possible to create a spell to send someone as well. If both functions are integrated, it will take time, but a spell that allows inter-world travel should be possible. That said… we’ve hit a problem.》
A problem?
《It’s about the concern Master had—the coordinates for Earth.》
Knew it…
《Which means, we’ll also need to develop a spell specifically for locating Earth. That too will take some time.》
Looks like there are still a bunch of obstacles ahead.
Even for Ellis, working on both spells simultaneously would be difficult.
《Correct. Developing both spells at the same time will significantly increase the required time.》
Got it. Then I’ll take care of the one that locates Earth.
《Understood. I’ll immediately begin development on the inter-world travel spell.》
I’m counting on you, partner.
I lifted my gaze and shared the update with everyone.
“Like I said earlier, the analysis is complete—but we’ll need two spells. One is to travel between worlds. The other is to pinpoint Earth’s exact location.”
Everyone looked concerned after hearing that.
Suzuno tugged gently at my sleeve with a worried expression.
“It’s alright. I’ve already asked the support AI to start developing the inter-world travel spell. I’ll handle the one for locating Earth. It’s gonna take some time.”
“I see…”
“But now we know that we can go home—and we’ve found a way to make it happen. We’re getting there. Returning to Earth is our shared goal, and I will make it happen.”
Everyone nodded at my words.
“Well then, I’m heading back to the mansion to start developing the spell. If anything comes up, just come find me. Oh—and Tendo.”
“Yeah?”
“If you want sparring partners, Kuzel, Char, and Zero are all around. Feel free to drop by.”
“Thanks. Maybe I’ll swing by soon.”
“Alright, I’m heading back. You’re welcome at the mansion anytime—but if you come just to mess with me, I will knock you out, got it?”
Had to lay that warning down. There are definitely a few jokers in this group.
When I gave off a bit of pressure, everyone nodded vigorously in unison.
“Especially you, Asakura.”
“Eh!? I-I wasn’t planning anything! Honest~!”
She turned her face away and started whistling—badly.
“Shinonome, I’m leaving her to you.”
“Yeah, yeah…”
Shinonome gave a tired sigh. I had a feeling she was always the one cleaning up Asakura’s messes.
Well, that’s just so her.
After leaving the grand hall, I decided to stop by Dillan’s office.
“You’re here already? Something happen? Looks like you’re alone this time…”
“I just finished talking to Tendo and the others about returning home.”
“Ah, yes. You mentioned that before. So… did you find a way?”
“Well…”
I explained everything to Dillan.
He looked thoughtful as he listened.
Still, I made sure to keep my tone upbeat—so he wouldn’t worry.
“But I think it’s gonna be okay.”
“Oh?”
“I’ve got a good feeling about it. I mean… we’ve made it this far already, right?”
Hearing that, Dillan smiled softly.
“You’re right. That makes sense.”
“Right? Anyway, I’m going to focus on developing the spell for a while.”
“Very well. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. I’ll support you however I can.”
“Thanks. I just came by to let you know—so I’ll be heading back now.”
With that, I left Dillan’s office and returned to the mansion.
~
I walked back to the mansion, but thanks to yesterday’s treaty ceremony, just about everyone recognized my face now—so naturally, I drew a lot of attention.
Whenever I stopped at a street vendor, they’d throw in freebies. It made me happy, sure, but it also left me feeling a little guilty.
“Hero sir, I’ll toss in a little extra for you!”
“Thanks. Appreciate it.”
“No problem at all!”
I stored everything one after another in my dimensional storage as I made my way home.
Before long, I arrived at the mansion.
“Welcome home, Master Haruto.”
Sebas greeted me at the entrance.
I began pulling out all the things I’d bought—or had been given—on the way back.
“My, my. Quite the haul today, I see.”
“I kept getting extras every time I bought something. Figured we might as well throw a little party for everyone at the mansion tonight.”
“Understood. I’ll inform the maids.”
“Thanks. Where is everyone now?”
“Lady Finne, Lady Iris, Lady Ephyr, Lady Suzuno, and Lady Ilmina are currently resting in their rooms. Lady Kuzel and Lady Charlotte are downstairs—Sir Zero is acting as their sparring partner.”
“I see. I think I’ll grab a quick bite before I get started on my work.”
“Very well. I’ll have something prepared. Oh, and I have a message from Lady Fran.”
Fran?
She was supposed to head back to the demon territory today—maybe she stopped by the mansion on her way out?
“Lady Fran said, ‘Once I clean up the mess in the demon territory, I’ll come live here.’”
“Is that really okay… for the Demon King?”
“Apparently, she plans to leave management in the hands of her Four Heavenly Kings.”
“Sounds more like she just doesn’t want to deal with it.”
“That may well be the case.”
Sebas and I both sighed at Fran’s antics.
After that, I had a light meal with Finne and the others, then headed down to the underground training room.
There, I found Kuzel and Charlotte lying on the floor, totally spent—but with satisfied looks on their faces.
“You two alright?”
I cast healing magic on them and used time magic to restore their battered equipment by reversing its state.
“You’re back… Thanks.”
“Thank you, Haruto.”
I turned to Zero and asked,
“How were they?”
“They’ve grown considerably. And they still have plenty of room to improve.”
Zero looked at the two of them as he said that.
Hearing his praise, the two girls looked genuinely pleased. They must’ve really felt how much stronger they’d become.
“We couldn’t even lift a finger back then against that Apostle… it was frustrating.”
“Same here. I realized I need to be much stronger.”
“Just don’t overdo it, alright? Don’t make me worry too much.”
“We know.”
“Yes. Thank you.”
I told them I’d like to gather everyone later and then headed back upstairs.
Before I could dive into development work, there was something I needed to say to everyone.
A little while later, once everyone had gathered, I spoke.
“The analysis of the Hero Summoning Magic Circle is complete.”
“Really!?”
Finne jumped to her feet, eyes locked on me.
The others looked equally stunned.
“Well… there are still a ton of problems, though.”
I explained the two major issues we were currently facing.
“Magic to travel between worlds, and another to locate the target world…”
Ilmina murmured, frowning—just like the rest of them.
Honestly, I might be the only one who can make them.
“That’s why I’m planning to hole up in my room for a while and focus on the development.”
“Understood. We’ll do what we can to help. Just let us know if there’s anything.”
“Exactly! We all want to support you, Haruto♪”
Finne and Iris smiled as they said that.
Everyone offered their support.
“Thanks. I’ll make it happen—no matter what.”
After a little more small talk, I finally got to work on developing the spell.
