Hallo lovely people, Chris Skinner (Bugleverse Producer, good luck to him), just texted to say The Gargle has 3 million ish downloads, which added to The Last Post means my Bugleverse shows have been downloaded about 10 million times. Which is very cool, and also I don’t really have a way to conceive of how many a million is, so is just “a nice sounding number that is more than I expected, or would have expected if I’d turned my mind to it, which I hadn’t”.
I don’t know what the celebration ought to be.
Writers meetings this week will have guest hosts as I will be doing more preggo admin (being back in Australia and getting all the things sorted out is much easier in a system I’m familiar with). The glucose tolerance test went fine for those worried, in that I felt pretty crappy but in a way that was as anticipated. Will find out results later this week.
I sort of can’t believe Christmas decor is already in its exponential growth stage; climbing up the walls of shops like a moss that’s taken hold and creeping into the background Muzak of public spaces til you find yourself humming “falalalalalalala” in the quiet of your own home and suddenly realise it’s breached the walls and is already inside.
I’ve found a place in Caloundra and will be planting my feet there until I’ve had the new baby and adjusted to the new normal. It’s an odd feeling to know I’ll be in the same place for a chunk of time, half comforting and half claustrophobic; constant movement can give the illusion of forward momentum.
It’s more difficult but probably more useful to think from a stationary point about what the next few months of productive work will look like with less Live Comedy and more Other Kinds Of Work.
That’s where reminding myself about the 10 million downloads comes in useful - isolating though it may be to not see or feel people react to the work in a room, I can remind myself that more people listen to any one episode of any one of my podcasts than would come see me in a whole month of edinburgh shows.
How to make sure that is a sustainable living is a different question; one partly answered by the Patreon and the things I can offer here.
(That said, if you want me to do your corporate Christmas gig for heaps of money, I will definitely say yes, because I quite like the challenge of making awkward corporate gigs fun, and I want to remind myself that small coastal town life is a thing I can come and go from, not a trap at the end of a path.)
