I flew back to Sydney from Melbourne a few days ago, and boy are my arms tired. Because of carrying Laser all around the airport for five hours. It was an absolute travel nightmare - good practice for the long haul to England next month I guess? To look at the sliver of silver lining.
My flight was delayed then cancelled, then the new flight also delayed, then they lost our bags. Laser Fraser was extremely good - mildly fretful at the airport stress-buzz but willing to be entertained out of it until the last half hour of the flight when she lost her mind. She was just saying what we were all thinking.
Then we got home with no bags, and I put her to sleep and then was about to FINALLY prep for my fancy charity debate and realised that while I had breastmilk in the freezer, bottles were in the bag, as was my makeup and stage clothes. So I couldn’t leave her with nothing, and had to go to the late night pharmacy for crap makeup and a bottle.
Then I wrote my speech in the Uber. Showed up at the four seasons with all these millionaire philanthropists in my crumpled milky travel clothes, which to my vague luck involved a large man’s collared white shirt, so it sort of looked a bit on purpose maybe? Among all the black tie. Eek.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun on stage and my team won, which is what matters. (Actually, not at all, children’s literacy was the matter at hand and the thing that matters. One of my charities of choice).
I got a little trophy and a hamper. Which… hampers are hilarious because they are full of ridiculously expensive fancy food, and if you look up the prices it’s like $30 for these spiced macadamia nuts, but because they’re always a gift (does anyone self buy a hamper? Please tell me if I’m wrong here), you feel like they’re free so you end up resentfully eating fistfuls of luxury nuts in the lobby while you wait for your cab home.
