Time warps, subterranean processes and Tea With Alice Salon 40

The clocks have changed, and the U.K. clocks will change at the end of this month! This is very exciting for U.K. connections, because it means the time zone difference is much more manageable (for me).

Though of course everyone who works across timezones has different ways of doing the mental maths, for me figuring out where the UK is at compared with sydney has been ‘add three and change the AM/PM’. But NOW it’s ‘add two’ and at the end of the month it will be ‘add one’! Which is way easier!

I realise this might be a completely weird way to figure out time differences for your brain, particularly if you’re a 24hr mental clock person rather than someone whose mental image of a day looks like 12 hours one way up and then the other 12 hours upside down. (Holy crap! Thankyou for making me suddenly realise that’s my mental image of it! The process of trying to communicate stuff like this is also a process of having to examine your own thinking. This is why I love trying to explain things!)

ANYWAY it’s more or less worked for me since I went to university in the U.K. and had to figure out when to Skype home, and still works for figuring out News Quiz, Gargle, Last Post, Bugle and Audible recording times so lets’s leave that little quirk intact until my brain decides something else is a better shortcut.

Recorded The Bugle last night 1pm U.K., 11pm my time with James Nokise and Zaltzman and it was glorious fun. Gargle tonight, Last Post (final ep!) and News Quiz tomorrow, and I’m so glad that my spin off shows don’t require me to cover the same stories as the ‘straight news satire’ shows, because the choices are to repeat yourself or to try to find four different joke angles to explore about the same heartbreaking story, which is a cool challenge sometimes (#HAGOW), but can also feel like running your head into a mud wall or some sort of Sisyphean satirical time-loop. It doesn’t cure you of waking up the day after recording with three better jokes in your head though! The way your subconscious keeps working on creative solutions when you ‘take time to rest’ (a vital part of the work process, actually, and not a form of laziness, which it took me decades to figure out) is astonishing, but it’s hard to figure out the stop and go buttons on subterranean systems.
