Tea With Alice Salon 27

So, Sydney is back in lockdown - the price we pay for having had a relatively charmed run through this pandemic as a city is being able to make plans and have them cancelled when these lockdowns come. The delta variant is no joke, though, and I haven’t yet seen a country be able to head it off - even the ones that have pretty good pandemic records.

The Bondi Festival run of CHRONOS on 9 & 10 July is off, and I don’t know when I’ll have the chance to perform that show live again, which is a shame, because I very much enjoy it, and really, half of micf and a four day run in Sydney isn’t long enough to really dig into a show and bring out all its little hidden enjoyments and nuances.

My dad is staying with me as his house is full of paint fumes, so I have lockdown dad company, which is both lovely and also a lot of dad per square meter of life. I feel grateful that my dad is a very reasonable specimen compared to most of the men of his generation, perfectly happy to entertain himself and he’s vaccinated (unlike so many eligible here who are “waiting for a better version of the vaccine”), so I don’t have that extra level of paranoia that I’m taking his life in my hands when I’m walking down the street or contemplating a takeaway cup of tea from one of the beleaguered cafes in my area who are all bravely putting little open air counters out again with quivering lower lip and puppy dog eyes.

I feel so sad for people in retail and hospitality… and dance and theatre and comedy, and anything that involves being anywhere near other people. Generally full of the milk of human sympathy (like almond milk but more water intensive to farm).

Which is why the salons are such a delight! (Smooth segue!) reminding me that I’ve had this absolute luxury of being able to do a version of what I do and talk to such interesting people all over the place. Drop suggestions of topics to discuss in the comments section below or DM me them if you prefer to open a can of worms privately!

I’ll send through the passcode to the relevant subscriber levels tomorrow!

Next week (salon 28) will be in US time (east or west coast, I have yet to decide, drop your votes in the comments section below), and then the week after which I would normally take off I will do an ‘open to all levels’ salon to celebrate number 30(!) and because I’ll likely still be in lockdown and will be getting serious cabin fever.

I might actually be able to make this one! Would love to hear about the formative experiences or personal attributes you have that drew you to the creative path you've taken.

This week, if you're up for it Alice, I'd love to hear about what creating means to you, or how you do it. In all its forms. A friend who was a touring musician/punk in the 90s, is getting back to writing and engaging with creating art after life/kids happened. Talking about our different projects, she started crying (good tears) because she had so been missing a part of herself. Listening to other people talk about making art, whatever the form, is really therapeutic. We could do a 50 minute hour. :) I'm sorry you're in lockdown.

I'm on the West Coast, but I like East Coasters, so I vote East Coast time.

East coast please! (Though if it's a West Coast US time I will stay up - I'm a night owl by inclination, if not by trade)
