Tomorrow’s Salon and Last Post Live Update

Thanks everyone who came along to watch The Last Post live (which will be this month’s episode of The Last Post). It’s always quite fun setting your alarm for 3.30am to prep for a morning show (call time was 4:30, but I wanted to wake up fully, and there’s nothing worse than having to juggle two guests and an alternate universe when you’re still groggy).

Waking up that early reminds me of buddhist Special Days at the meditation centres of my childhood. You’d set your alarm for 4 or 4.30 and then get into your nice lungyi and shirt and trot down to the kitchens to cut up fruit impeccably (the older ladies had STANDARDS) and arrange flowers. I remember feeling very old and responsible when I set the alarms for the morning because I was usually in a room with mum (as I got older and the meditation centres in our little tradition went from tents and ‘demountables’ to proper buildings, mum would get put in incrementally more convenient rooms, closer to the toilets or with some air conditioning to take the edge off the worst of her MS symptoms. I benefited from that because I was helping her.)

Anyway, then after the morning’s ceremonies and meditation, we’d get to eat the beautifully cut up fruit in big bowls, and the Burmese ladies would often make Mohingya or other delicious things.

All of which to say, when people ask me how I manage the time-zone things - waking up early for a U.K. call, I actually find it really nostalgic and nice to set up those cues. Maybe I should make myself a fruit salad or a cup of three in one and really fire up those nostalgic excitement receptors the next time I have an early call.
