MICF is cancelled

So, today I have 6x eps of the last post and one Bugle to record. Also, I’m meant to be previewing my new show Chronos at the Glasgow Comedy festival. So of course I woke up this morning to find out that Melbourne has been cancelled.

I have no idea what I’m supposed to do. I just chatted with Laura Davis on video chat. She’s distraught, in Perth (the worst). What are all the artists going to do? All my friends and colleagues and enemies?

Do I fly back to Australia? Do I go to Sydney, or Melbourne, do I see my family? Can I see my family? Would I have to quarantine myself away from them? Will I get any money back from MICF? Is Sydney comedy festival and Perth Comedy Festival also cancelled? Even if they aren’t, will anyone buy tickets?

I’m lucky - I have podcasting work I can do from isolation. I have your support here on this ridiculous platform. I have work that I’m proud of that’s free online so people can keep engaging with my work even if I can’t be performing live. I have Savage coming out on Amazon Prime on 19 April, which doesn’t need people to be physically exposing themselves to enjoy. I’m so lucky to have built those things in time for live comedy to be smashed into the wall for an unforeseeable amount of time.

And still, I have no idea whether I should get on a flight back to Australia or not.

I was about to release a Tea With Alice but I have to redo the intro... for obvious reasons.

Love to you.

Yeah, we’ll have to figure out how to make it work until we’re all back out in the wild again.

Thanks pal. It’s all pretty scary. A lot of known unknowns

Sorry man! I’ll try to get the mailing list of people who’ve bought tickets and (even if you get a refund) will try to give you free access to whatever I end up doing online.

If this goes on long enough I expect that paid streaming performances will start happening for a lot of stuff - along the lines of Pay Per View with boxing and such. Would suck for performers who want/need the live crowd but better than nothing.

Alice, you should be listening to the health professionals and experts. Whichever side of the world you end up on you will be welcomed

Until this week, my read on it was that it was an overreaction. Something changed on or about Tuesday and I think it was a couple of annoucements out of Johns Hopkins and the CDC in the US that floored me. Sam Harris has recorded two excellent pods with Nicholas Christakis from Yale University and Amesh Adalja from Johns Hopkins that I think are essential listening.

Ah dang, Perth wont be far behind then, and I already have my tickets. Once again your comedy (show) timing is awful: you did your last Perth show exactly 2 weeks before i discovered you, binged all your Bugles and the Trilogy and a bunch of Teas and became a big fan. No biggie, mate. Stay healthy and we will catch you live sometime on the far side of it all.

I'm still trying to work out of everyone's overreacting or underreacting... as far as I can work out, it's safest to assume you're going to be exposed at some point in the near future and do your best to ensure that you're somewhere safe and comfortable when you get it. [I'm currently sitting in a hospital consulting room -- waiting for an engineer to start work on something I'm supposed to be supervising -- and the panic a couple of minutes ago when a patient had a coughing fit due -- he said -- to having accidentally swallowed his chewing gum, had to be heard to be believed!] But I agree with the others who suggest that not being in an aeroplane is probably a good idea, right now...

I’m still going to Melbourne as planned. But I’m bummed I won’t be seeing any shows down there now. You can always do a show at the Servo if you want.

If I were you Alice, I'd stay put for the time being. The situation here is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. My colleagues and I are taking bets on which one of us is going to go down first.

From my perspective, I wouldn't want to be contained in a tube with recycled air of loads of people for 24 hours (or so), the risk of the extra exposure wouldn't be worth it... I presume you've pre-booked your tickets (months in advance), so I'm wondering if they do refunds.

I’m really sad. I love Melbourne - the audiences and the community of comedians is so nourishing

On the bright side there should be a lot of people with free time to have on the podcast.

Sorry to hear that for you, all the other artists and the audiences. It's a different approach to the UK who aren't yet looking to prevent large gatherings, but I guess it is uncharted territory for all of us. Take Care

My guy and I had tickets to see you at MICF and we are so disappointed not to see you. But, needs must etc. And I reckon, if you don't need to travel, don't. Look forward to your 2021 show x
