Hallo! I have been thinking about how frustrating AMAs are for me a little bit - when I’ve done them on Instagram I find myself stumped by a lot of the questions. It’s not the fault of the people asking questions so much as I think it’s a choice paralysis thing.

The problem

When presented with the option of asking any question people ask things like “what’s your favourite song” or “what’s your favourite book”, neither of which I have good answers for. Even if I had good answers I don’t know how illuminating they would be for a question-asker. Maybe if they were asking someone else, the answers would be rich and interesting, but I don’t think I have a favourite book or movie or song. It depends on my mood, and what I feel like absorbing. Maybe I’m bad at retaining things, or maybe I’m hyper conscious of how many other options there are. I tend to get very absorbed in the song or book or movie I’m ‘in’ while I’m in it, so whatever I’m listening to or reading is my favourite while I’m there - often even if it’s not very objectively ‘good’.

A possible solution

So here’s a variant on the AMA format - something I’d find interesting from other artists.

Ask me below about one of my works - as big as a whole project or (maybe preferably) as small as a single joke and I’ll tell you why or how or where I wrote it. If it turns up some interesting answers I’ll do it again.

Xx

P.S.

Still not sure. Entirely possible MICF will be cancelled. Waiting to see

I do love him. I love big action movies and Pitch Black was fab

So The Last Post is a 2020 only project?

What effect on your touring / show schedule is the CoronaVirus having?

I'm wondering if you really do love Vin Diesel and his movies, or if it's just part of the "bit" about GOMAD

I was drinking a genmaicha, and talking with Chris about the fact that we needed a "big news week" to replicate the way the real news works (eg the Harry/Meghan news week). It occurred to me to start with tube shutdowns and go from there. I can't remember when the picts occurred to me, but I knew it had to be an underground civilisation so we could do meta satire about class/immigration. Then the picts seemed natural.

Deliberate artistic choice - the tone is different from my standup. Unfortunately, writing chronos now and there's very little I can transfer over the other way.

I am surprised that it's still on TV. I get it recognised maybe once every three months?

The under-London society of Picts -- where (in creative terms) did they come from? What sort of tea were you drinking when they appeared?

I’m impressed by how little of your existing standup has appeared in The Last Post so far (that I’ve noticed at least). Is this a deliberate artistic choice or a requirement from the network?

It will be a longer show with an interval. Not sure how that will affect the show yet, but it definitely will. Whether it’s bringing in content from previous shows, or doing a longer version of Chronos. I guess we’ll see!

This I think I’ll answer at the end of the year when we’re done with the pod

How often do people recognise your voice from the avocado ad you did? How long was that recording at the time? Are you surprised that it’s still on TV?

From what I understand you are primarily a festival comedian. This generally means that you do a tight set lasting just under an hour. Delighted as I am that you've now booked a tour of the UK are you intending to do anything different in the tour show (i.e. put things in you were force to remove because of time constraints) or stick to the tried and tested festival format?

68 installments of The Last Post in - what is the writing/recording schedule like? Specifically, what is the latest you have recorded before publication (not sure if that is the right term for a podcast?) and do you record more than one at a time or is it truly a daily piece of work?

A tiny ring remote on my microphone hand

Being bad about self promoting, not just part of her shtick! :D

For "Ethos" the timing has to be spot on for both you and the cues for the robot. What was your process for the writing, allowing for audience response before/after the robot speaks, and how much editing of that did you need to do as you did the first few shows and had peoples' reactions to work with?

There’s a massive spreadsheet! And yes, the guests need a whole update on the facts.

Oh dear! I thought that had been updated. Will double check

I love the sci-fi/fantastical major breaking news stories you have sprinkled throughout The Last Post. Do you have a roadmap for certain storylines you want to introduce throughout the year? Is it hard to keep track / do you need to brief guests in on things like New New Zealand or the Picts before recordings? Or, umm, has alternative universe Alice said anything about that?

I hate those kinds of questions! Also, I clicked on your 'Upcoming Gigs' section on your website and nothing shows up?
